ATLAS.ti
Welcome to ATLAS.ti 5.5
This document is is updated regularly. The current version will be available on our web site at http://www.atlasti.com/download.html. You can also use the online help (F1) to access the live manual and up-to-theminute documentation from our site. This document is not intended to be used as a guide to ATLAS.ti. For learning ATLAS.ti and for productive work please consult the following resources:

The full manual ATLMAN.PDF. This is available after installation from ATLAS.ti's Help menu. If you did not install the manual, you will find it in the DOCS folder of the CD. The Quick Tour should be installed and available and you can launch it via the shortcuts in the Scientific Software folder from the Windows Start menu. You can also find it in the Docs folder of the CD and on the web site. The Online Help is available via F1 when running ATLAS.ti. It closely resembles the full manual and you use the powerful search features offered by the Help system.

Please note, that the full manual atlman.pdf does not incorporate changes since the first release of ATLAS.ti 5 in June 2004. Refer to the online documentation in addition as stated above.

System Requirements
An Intel based PC or a Apple Macintosh with BootCamp or Parallels and 500 MB minimal RAM are needed. Of course, the more processing power and the more RAM you have, the better! ATLAS.ti 5 runs fine on Windows XP and Vista.

Installation
This release can be used to install a fresh copy of ATLAS.ti 5.5. It may also be used to upgrade an already installed version of ATLAS.ti. Attention: If you have modified any of the sample files in folder SAMPLES, XML or HTML, you need to store them in a safe place before starting the upgrade. Even better: use Copy Bundle to pack each of your modified sample projects to create a backup. Takes less space, creates a single file, and will not be overwritten. If you are updating a network installation, make sure to also run the client setup on all workstations. If shortcuts are not updated correctly on the client, choose Refresh

Client from the list of shortcuts in the Windows Programs menu folder Scientific Software available from the taskbar. Read the netinst.pdf manual, located in the Docs folder on the CD, before doing a LAN-aware installation of ATLAS.ti.

Service Packs
Once in a while we upload a so called service pack which updates your current version in order to implement new and improved functions or to remove unwanted "bugs". The Service Pack Manager (under the Tools menu) has a live update facility which makes it easy to check for up-to-the-minute updates once in a while. It connects to our download server, and checks, delivers and installs any updates applicable for your version of ATLAS.ti. By default, automatic checking for updates is active and should be left on unless you experience access problems.

Features of ATLAS.ti 5.5

Version 5.5 incorporates all changes released since the first release of ATLAS.ti 5.0 in June 2004 (Version 5.0.60). For a complete list of changes please refer to http://www.atlasti.com/servicepackArchive.html. Below, a few significant additions and improvements of 5.5 compared to 5.2.21 are listed. 5.2.21 -> 5.5.0 Hybrid Multimedia Engine Finally, our multi media processor has a new, powerful engine for handling multimedia files. Both the MCI and DirectShow technologies are now available to use virtually all files that can be played back on your computer, e.g., in the Windows Media Player. You don't really have to be aware of the technology, it works "under the hood", simply giving access to a wider variety of multimedia formats and improved performance. Use Multimedia Keys When operating the Multimedia coding tool, you can now use the special keys available on multimedia keyboards. The AudioTranscription F4 pedal in standard configuration toggles Play/Pause. Talking Head Select text in the primary document or select a quotation or memo. Choose "Speak ..." from the output menu. Then lean back, close your eyes and let ATLAS.ti read the selected passages. Think of it as an alternative way to "contact" your data. May not always work perfectly, it depends on voices and base speech technology (SAPI 5.x) available on your computer. Should not be an issue under Vista and XP. HU Editor's Wallpaper How very important!-) Via the context menu, the wallpaper display can be switched off. Instead you get a random-color screen with the option to display codes in a code

cycle. This is meant as a test to see how good a new display technology we use. Should run on all computers out there. This is a glimpse of a new image PD management in version 6 (due to be released later this year). Font Management A new "Apply to:" button in the general preferences' font section allows you to spread the selected font to all remaining contexts. This is a considerable shortcut to specifying the font for each context one by one. Hold down the CTRL key to keep the original font sizes. Improved: Google Codes Select one or more codes in the code manager, then select Search Google from the Miscellaneous menu. This opens your web browser and presents the hits (if any). And many other improvements and fixes Right-to-left language bug removed, print link comments in code hierarchy report, text converter problems fixed, GDI+ graphics engine integrated, magnetic windows (query tool, network tools) .
