Each of the 300 Secondary One students was asked to name their favourite CCA. The
table below shows the results of the choices made by the students.
CCA NCC Girl Guides Robotics Club Concert Band
No. of Students 100 95 x 55

Find the value of x and use the space below to draw a pie chart to illustrate the above
results.

Solution:

x = 300 − (100 + 95 + 55)

= 50

The pie chart illustrates how a man spends his wages each month.
(a) Find the percentage of his wages spent on food.
(b) Given that he saves $284 per month, calculate his monthly wages.
(c) If his expenditure on other items in a particular month exceeds that of food
by $37.50, calculate the amount of rent that he is paying for that month.

Solution:

108
(a) Percentage of wages spent on food = ×100%
360
= 30%
360
(b) His monthly wages = × $284
(360 − 114 − 90 − 108)
= $2 130
90
(c) Amt of rent for that month = × $37.50
(114 − 108)
= $562.50

The table below gives a record of the number of new cars sold in the years from 2000
to 2006.

Year 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006

No. of new cars sold 45 30 28 42 55 52 60

(a) Draw a histogram to represent the data.

(b) State the year when the increase in new car sales was the greatest.
(c) The number of new cars sold in 2004 represents 25% of the total number of
vehicles sold in 2004. If this information is represented in a pie chart showing
the total number of vehicles sold in 2004, find the angle of the sector
representing the number of new cars sold.

The following table shows the examination results in Mathematics of the Secondary
One students in a particular school.

Marks (x) Frequency

45 ≤ x < 50 m
50 ≤ x < 55 23
55 ≤ x < 60 38
60 ≤ x < 65 85
65 ≤ x < 70 95
70 ≤ x < 75 76
75 ≤ x < 80 57

(a) Given that the total number of students is 380, find m .

Hence, calculate the percentage of students who obtained less than 50 marks.

(b) Draw a histogram to represent the data.

Solution:

(a) m = 380 – (57+76+95+85+38+23)
