Types of Water Bodies in Bangladesh

An oxbow lake is an abandoned river meander that has been isolated from the main channel by deposition and filled with water. A beel is a small, low-lying floodplain depression that sometimes dries up seasonally, while a haor is a larger seasonal floodplain depression that can contain smaller beels as water levels drop. A polder is a low-lying reclaimed area protected by dikes that has been drained for agricultural and human settlement, with Bangladesh containing 123 total polders including 59 along the coast.
