Note: For a complete learning experience, it is highly recommended that students complete the tutorials. However, if the material has already been taught, students can use the tutorials as a point of reference when completing the assignment.
Materials Required Technology: The following technology is required and is not included in this Lesson Pack. Refer to the Lesson Plan section in this document to verify access to the following technology requirements: ArcGIS Online (arcgis.com) Web mapping application Internet browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari) ArcGIS Online account (either a public or organizational account) Access to a smartphone Google Account Data: Data for the assignment are collected by the individual student in the field using their smartphone. Data for the tutorials are included in this Lesson Pack where applicable. For more information on how to access and set up the data, please refer to the Lesson Plan section of this document. An assignment is a student activity intended as the final module of this Lesson Pack and seeks to allow students, in a hands-on and project-based approach, to apply the GIS concepts and skills learned to a given issue or topic. Data for the assignment are included in this Lesson Pack. Assignment Answer Key For Teacher use only, an assignment answer key outlines the suggested answers to the questions that are posed in the assignment.
Lesson Plan
Esri Canada strongly advises teachers to work through all facets of the Lesson Plan from the presentation through the tutorials to the assignment prior to delivering the lesson to students. Teachers should test the tutorials and assignment in the same computing environment that the students will be using. It is also recommended that teachers test all links within the tutorials and assignment prior to having students complete the tutorial or assignment. To confirm your computing environment meets the technology requirements please complete the following: 1. Open an Internet browser and go to ArcGIS Online - http://www.arcgis.com/home . 2. Click on Map icon to open the ArcGIS Map Viewer.
Pan and zoom around the map to test internet connection speed. Be sure to test using the internet connection the students will be using.

Pre-class Preparation: 1. Download and Save the Data A dataset is required to complete the tutorial(s). Data for all tutorials are included in the Tutorials folder downloaded with this Lesson Pack. Copy and save all tutorial content into a location that students can access. 2. Test Technology; Reserve Computers Refer to the Materials Required section in this document for more information on what technology is required. 3. Print Tutorial Document(s) (optional) Print document(s) or supply students with a digital version. In-class Exercise: 1. Set up Data with Students Show students how to manage their data: a. Get students to navigate to the location on their computer where you saved the Tutorials folder. b. Tell the students to Copy this folder and Paste it to their own personal location. c. Tell students to remember where they Pasted their folder. This is the location where students access, use and save their own data.

Throughout the assignment, students are presented with questions to encourage critical spatial thinking. Questions are denoted with a Q in the assignment document. Students should submit their answers on separate named sheets of paper. An Assignment Answer Key document has been provided as part of this Lesson Pack. This document provides suggested answers to the questions. 4. Extension Exercises (Optional) At the end of the assignment, this section provides further analysis of the issue. It can be completed if time permits or for bonus marks.
