It should be read in conjunction with theinstructions for the safe use, given overleaf, of which It forms an integral part and with any specific instructions issued by the supplier. This information s ofa general nature only covering the main points forthe safe use of various types of slings for general iting Purposes. ALWAYS: + Plan the lft, establish the weight of the load and prepare the landing area ensuring that it will take the weight. + Check sings and equipment are free of damage, use slings/slinging methods suitable forthe load and protect from sharp edges and comers + Attach the sling securely to the load and appliance and position hooks to face outwards. + Ensure the load balanced and will not tit oral + Keep fingers, toes ete clear when tensioning slings and when landing loads. + Ensure that the load is fee tobe lifted. + Make a tral lift and trial lower, NEVER: + Use damaged slings or accessories. + Tvst, knot oF le slings. + Hammer slings into position + Overload slings due to the weight ofthe load or the mode of, 198 + Trap stings when landing the load. + Drag slings over floors etc or attempt to pull trapped slings from under loads. + Allow personnel to ride on loads. Sling Configurations and Rating Slings are avaliable in single, two, three and four lg or endless form. n practice i will be found that chain wie rope and fiber rope slings are avaiable In any ofthese configurations but that flat woven webbing is limited to singe leg and endless whist roundsings are only supplied in endless form . The maximum load that sling may itn use il be governed by the singing arrangement (mode of use) and may vary from the marked WA" Inthe case often slings the SWL forthe various modes ofuseis usually given on the information label. In other cases Is neces sary to multiply the marked SWI by a mode factor. ‘The following three simple rules will ensure that the sling is not overloaded. In some cases this will mean that the sling will be under utilised although this s unlikely to hinder the user unduly, Where the maximum utilisation Is required reference should be made to a competent person who understands the factors In- volved and who can perform the necessary calculations. a 1) Forstraight lft never-exceed the marked SWLandin the case ‘of mult-leg sings the specified angle or ange of angles. 2) When using slings in choke hitch multiply the marked SWL by (08 to obtain the reduced maximum load the sling may lift le reduce the safe working load by 20%, 3) With mult-feg slings, when using less than the full number of legs, reduce the maximum load in proportion to the number of legs in use. Simply multiply the marked SW by the number of legs in use expressed as a fraction of the total thus: one leg of a ‘wo leg sling =1/2, marked SW, three legs ofa four leg sling 3/4, marked SWI and soon. Operative Training Slings should only be used by trained operatives who understand the methods of ating and application of mode factors Safe use of Slings Good singing practice must ensure that theloadis as safe and secure inthe alr as it was on the ground and that no harm is done to the load, iting equipment other property or persons Establish the weight ofthe load, ensure the iting method is suitable and inspect the sling and attachments for obvious de- fects Prepare the landing area making sure the foo is strong ‘enough to take the load. Follow any specific instructions from the supplier Ensure the lifting points over the center of gravity. Any loose parts ofthe load should be removed or secured. Secure the sling firmly to the load by hooks onto iting points or shackles etc. The sting must not be twisted, knotted or kinked in anyway. -Use packing to prevent damage tothe sling from comers or edges and to protect the load Do not exceed the SWL or rated angle Any choke angle must not exceed 120° and any basket 90° Do not hammer force or wedge slings or acessories into postion; they must ft feely. When attaching more than one sling ta the hook ofthe appliance use a shackle to join the sings and avoid ‘overcrowding the hook. This information is of a general nature only covering the main points forthe safe use of Web Lashings made from man- ‘made fiber. t may be necessary to supplement this information for specific applications. See also the general guidance on load restraint, given overleaf. ALWAYS: +Inspect web lashings before use + Calculate the lashing force(s) required forthe chosen method of load restraint + Select the capacity and number of web lashings to provide at least the calculated lashing force(s) + Ensure the lashing points on the vehicle andlor load are of ad ‘equate strength. + Position the web lashing so that the load Is uniformly spread ‘over its width and protect the web lashing from small r cially sharp edges. + Ensure the web lashings are correctly tensioned, + Exercise care when releasing web lashings in case the load has become unstable since the lashings were applied. NEVE! + Use web lashings to lift a load. + Knot or tie web lashings. + Overload web lashings. + Use web lashings overa sharp edge without edge protection, + Expose web lashings to direct heat or flames. + Expose web lashings to chemicals without consulting the sup plier + Use web lashings which are cut, have loose or damaged stitch ing, a damaged tensioner or damaged terminal fittings. Selecting the Correct Web Lashing The standard for web lashings is 8S EN 12195-22001. Web lash- ings ae available in range of capacities and lengths and in var- ous configurations. Some are general purpose. Others are in- tended for specific applications such as securing cars by their wheels Selection should start with an assessment of the forces acting on the load, The lashing force(s) required should be calculated in ac- cordance with BS EN 12195-1: 2010. Next check whether the lash- ing points on the vehicle and/or load are of adequate strength. If necessary apply a greater number of lashings to spread the force _across more lashing points, Web lashings are marked with their lashing capacity (LC). expressed in daN (deca Newton = 10 New- tons) This sa force approximately equivalent toa weight of Tka. Using Web Lashings Safely Ensure that the tensioner Is fe to align and not bent over an edge. Ensure that the webbing isnot twisted or knotted and that the terminal ftings engage corectly with the lshing poins Ensure thatthe webbing isloaded evenly acoss ts wicth and pro- tected fom sharp and smal radius edges by suitable sleeves or edge protectors Checking the tension after travelling a short distance is recom- ‘mended. Ensure that the webbing Is protected against sources of friction, abrasion and heat. In-service Inspection and Storage: Web lashings can easily be damaged by tensioning the webbing across small radius edges or loading the edge of the webbing in- stead of ensuring the load is spread over its fll width, Avoid this by correct placement of the web lashing and the use of protective sleeves and edge protection. Howevery damage may occur acc dentally asa result ofthe load moving in tansit hence the need to Inspect before each use. Web lashings may accidentally be exposed to chemicals. Most are manufactured from polyester which Is resistant to moderate strength acids butis damaged by alkalis, Weak chemical solutions will become increasingly stronger by evaporation. f appropriate, the webbing may be cleaned with clear water and allowed to dry naturally. Never force dry web lashings. Web lashings should be inspected for obvious signs of damage before each use. Do notuse the web lashing fany of the following defects are found: illegible markings; damaged, chaffed or cut webbing: damaged or oosestitching; heat damage;burns;chemi- cal damage; solar degradation; damaged or deformed end fit- tings. Web lashings will deteriorate gradually over time due to normal wear. The LEEA recommends that they should be inspected by a competent person at least every 6 months and a record made of the result. Web lashings should only be repaired by someone competent to do s0.For long term storage the storage area should be dry, clean, {ree of any contaminates and shaded from direct sunlight. They are durable, long lasting and easy to inspect. The main advantage with chain slings is that they can easily be repaired if any damaged component or linkis found during inspection. We manufacture chain slings conforming to BS EN 818-4. ‘The distance between the crane hook and the load is known as the “Head Room” Ifa specific head room is required, the’Reach’ of the chain sling must increase as the angle between the legs increases as shown opposite. Fioos Ha 18 FR HOH ‘The reach of a chain sling is the distance between bearing points of the upper and lower terminal fittings. This distance, commonly known as the “Bearing to Bearing’ should be quoted when ordering slings. Shortening clutches may be fitted to a sling, making the reach adjustable, hence Increasing the versatility of the sling.
