Lattice Math Examples

The document provides instructions for setting up and solving multiplication problems using an area model approach. It explains how to first set up the problem by writing the numbers along the left side and bottom, then make matches between the factors and multiply along the diagonals. It notes that for larger numbers, carrying may be required when adding along diagonal stripes to get the final answer.

OK, let's start doing one:

Set it up like this:

First, we do

Then, we do
Then, we do

Then, the last one:

Now, just add down the diagonal stripes... Start at the

bottom and work your way up the stripes:
We get our answer
by reading down
the left side and
across the bottom.
(Just ignore the
first zero!)

Let's do one with bigger numbers!

Get it set up!

Make your matches
and multiply:

,
,
,

Start at the bottom and add down the diagonal

stripes... But, look what happens when we hit the
yellow diagonal stripe!
We get a two digit answer... So, we just need to carry
into the next diagonal stripe. It's the same thing we
do with regular addition!

Now, finish it off
