Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar
, he is an American rap artist, he was initially signed to Top Dawg Entertainment in 2012, himself and the label signed a joint venture deal with Aftermath and Interscope Records. He is a member of a music group called Black Hippy. Kendrick first began to gain major attention in 2010 after the release of his 4th mixtape Overly Dedicated, Before his fame Kendrick had amassed a huge internet following working with the likes of Dr. Dre and Drake, as Lamar became more popular he was nominated 7 Grammy nominations in the 56th Annual Grammy Awards in 2014, for Best New Artist, Album of the Year and Best Rap Song. At the age of 8 Kendrick witnessed his idols Tupac, Notorious Big, Dr. Dre and Eminem. They filmed a music video for their hit single California Love which would then come on to be very significant in Kendricks life. These names influenced him not only in his music but his day-to-day lifestyle. This song Im showing to you is (Swimming Pools), this song is the second single from his major-label debut album, and the song was written by himself and Tyler Williams and produced by T-Minus. T-Minus is a Canadian from Ajax, Ontario. He is a record producer and songwriter for OVO Sound, he has produced for many famous names in the Hip-Hop world, his work has been rewarded by getting 2 Grammy nominations in 2011 and 2013. The camera work is basic but works very well to lyrics in the song, and also follows some of the conventions you would expect from a typical Hip-Hop music video, In his song he makes references to himself as if he is daydreaming or confused, this happens when the music changes beat and his voice sinks quieter and the visuals show him listening to this, the line before the chorus Kendricks takes a few sips then a very drunk man say he needs to Get in a swimming pool full of Liquor and dive right in, toward the end there are shots of him in a pool full of Liquor. The typical conventions are; The Classic Ford Mustang, The expensive Liquor, The attractive females, the vast amount of jelwery and the location set at a
party. The video does cut to the beat specifically and the beginning where the glass bottles are broken, There are close-ups of Kendrick himself and a few of the females, the visuals changes pace by slowing down after the chorus. The Video relates to one other song Kendrick has which is called Bitch, Dont Kill My Vibe because yet again there are more references to liquor, he is baptised in pool of liquor. Ben Howard Benjamin John Howard born 24th April in 1987 in West London, England. He then moved to Totnes in Devon, he is an English singer-songwriter also plays the Guitar and Drums, his musical interest was exposed by his parents whom listened to 1960s and 1970s artists like John Martyn. He started writing songs when he was 10 going on 11, when he was interviewed by an American Songwriter Ben stated that when he was a kid he started playing the guitar because he liked to put words together and make stuff up. After attending Torquay Boys Grammar School he began studying Journalism at University of Falmouth, Cornwall. 6 months prior to the completion of his course he decided to focus on making music full-time. His reputation grew and grew and was eventually asked to sign for Island Records. The song Im showing to you is (Old Pines); this song is from his debut album Every Kingdom. The song was written by Ben and produced by Chris Bond there is no real background history on this producer other than he lives in Totnes, Devon where Ben is from. The video was shot in Co. Clare in Ireland. There are references made between the footage and the lyrics for instance the As the old pine fell there is a shot of a pine tree wood, As we stood steady like the stars there is a shot of the stars and We slept like dogs down by the fireside there is a shot of Ben by an outdoor fire. The video does not cut to the beat because of the song genre there is no beat, the video also includes close ups of Bens face, the other videos that this artist has brought out have been similar because all the videos are very naturalistic. The conventions of a folk genre are a little misleading but can be acknowledged through out.
