Step-by-step installing Hyper-V final version on Windows server 2008 Enteprise edition 64-bit

This example installation was made using HP DL380 server so in this tutorial there will be also some examples that are specific for this server.

Activating Intel Virtualization technology and No-Execute memory protection


Get into BIOS and under advanced options find:

Turn this paramater to Enabled

Also Enable Intel Virtualzation Techonology

Save changes your server will POWER OFF! If it does not you should do it manualy. To enable this two features your server must be powered off completely!!! It's not enough to reboot it!

Installing server ...

Insert your Smartstart CD !WATCH OUT! You need to put a 64 bit version of Smartstart to intsall 64 bit Windows server 2008!!! Install your Windows server 2008 Setup your password. Configure your regional settings if you were not able to do that during setup. DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING just UPDATE your server Reboot your server.

Installing Hyper-V and updating it ...


After all updates are installed use Server manager to install Hyper-V role and then reboot your server. After server is up again do not run Hyper-V manager... We first need to intsall update Update for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition (KB950050) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=F3AB3D4B-63C8-4424-A738BADED34D24ED&displaylang=en Reboot your server

During startup you will see something like:

!!! This is HP specific !!! But if you use HP DL380 your server will hang on:

Just turn it off by pressing and holding the power button. Reboot with your Windows server 2008 64 bit CD Chose your language and click Next

Select Repair your computer you might need to install your raid controler drivers so have them prepared

Select your Windows server installation

Select Command prompt

You need to rename file called cpqteam.dll to cpqteam.dll.safe in c:\program files\hp\ncu This file is HP Network Configuration utility file and it makes problems to Hyper-V installation After instalation it can be reenabled. The installation/update of Hyper-V role will continue and you will see something like:

After this login screen will appear. Now you can start Hyper-V manager and configure other stuf...
