Compressed Natural Gas

Compressed natural gas (CNG) is made by compressing natural gas to less than 1/100th of its original volume at a pressure between 3000-3600 psi. It is stored in hard cylindrical or spherical containers and can be used in gasoline and diesel engines. CNG cars available in Europe are bi-fuel vehicles that can run on either gasoline or CNG selected by the driver via a dashboard switch. CNG has advantages of being cleaner and safer than gasoline but requires a much larger storage space due to its high pressure storage requirements.

Compressed natural gas

CNG is made by compressing natural gas (which is mainly composed of methane [CH4]), to less than ! of its "olume at standard atmospheric pressure# $t is stored and distributed in hard containers, at a normal pressure of %&&'%%& bar (%(&&')%&& psi), usually in cylindrical or spherical shapes# CNG can be used in *tto+cycle (gasoline) and modified ,iesel cycle -ngines# CNG cars a"ailable in -urope are bi+fuel "ehicles burning one fuel at at ime# .heir engine is a standard gasoline internal combustion engine ($C-)# .his means that they can indifferently run on either gasoline from a gasoline tan/ or CNG from a separate cylinder in the trun/# .he dri"er can select what fuel to burn by simply flipping a switch on the dashboard# .hese containers are not typically temperature controlled, but are allowed to stay at local ambient temperature# 0d"antages#

o Combustion does produce greenhouse gases

o more environmentally clean alternative

o much safer than other fuels in the event of a spill o CNG-powered vehicles are considered to be safer than gasoline-powered vehicles.

,isad"antages#

o CNG requires a much larger volume to store the same mass of gasoline or petrol and the use of very high pressures (20 to 2! bars".

0lternation need#
installing a CNG cylinder in the trun#$ installing a CNG in%ection system and the electronics.

CNG compared to 1NG# CNG is often confused with li2uefied natural gas (1NG)# 3hile both are stored forms of natural gas, the /ey difference is that CNG is in compressed form, while 1NG is in li2uefied form# CNG has a lower cost of production and storage compared to 1NG as it does not re2uire an e4pensi"e cooling process and cryogenic tan/s# CNG re2uires a much larger "olume to store the same mass of gasoline or petrol and the use of "ery high pressures ()&&& to 4&&& psi, or %&5 to %65 bar)#
