Pre-Lab Questions For Experiment 2 (DSC)

The document discusses pre-lab questions for an experiment using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It addresses what reference material is used (indium for its well-defined melting point), what type of crucible holds the sample (aluminum/alumina for its strength and stability at high temperatures), why the sample must be handled carefully and heated above its melting point prior to testing (to avoid contamination and erase previous thermal history), why temperature selection is important (to stay within instrument precision), and how the sample can be cooled below room temperature (by increasing the flow of purging gas). Key parameters that can be determined using DSC include melting points, enthalpies, crystallization temperatures, glass transition temperatures,

Pre-Lab Questions for Experiment 2 (DSC)

1.

What is the reference material used in this experiment? Indium It is used because its melting temperature is low enough to coincide with the temperature range in which most of the polymer transitions that apply to this experiment occur. It has a well-defined melting point with an accepted melting temperature and enthalpy of melting of 156.4oC and 28.5J/g respectively.)

2.

What type of crucible do you used to hold the pan? Aluminum/Alumina Crucible It possesses a high melting point, strong hardness, and good chemical stability, making it a good material to withstand high temperature and chemical corrosion.

3.

Why do you need to handle the sample with care, i.e. not touching the pan? Contamination of sample might occur as the skin moisture and oils will be left on the sample pan and lid if they are picked up by fingers. The extra mass will affect the result.

4.

Why do you need to heat up the sample above its melting point in prior to cool it down? Heating the samples above the expected melting point or glass transition point or up to a temperature high enough is to erase previous thermal history.

5.

Why does temperature selection become very important in conducting experiment using DSC? Temperature and heat values should be within normal ranges for the instrument or at least within the precision and accuracy limits allowed.

6.

If cooling down below room temperature is required, how do you cool it down? Increasing the flow of purging gas from the cooling accessories.

7.

What are the parameters that can be determined using DSC? Thermodynamics parameters, for example, melting points, enthalpies of melting crystallisation temperatures, glass transition temperatures and degradation temperatures.
