Earth Day is an annual event that aims to raise awareness of and appreciation for our environment. It was founded in 1969 by peace activist John McConnell. He introduced the idea of a "lobal holiday called #Earth Day# at a conference on the environment in 1969. The first Earth Day celebration was in 1970. It was quickly adopted by the United Nations. In 1971 then Secretary-General U Thant proclaimed that Earth Day should be observed every year. He said "May there only be peaceful and cheerful Earth Days to come for our beautiful Spaceship Earth as it continues to spin and act in frigid space with its warm and fragile cargo of animate life."
