Quantum Mechanics Problem Set 6

This document contains a quantum mechanics problem set involving angular momentum operators. It asks the student to: 1) Prove commutation relations for angular momentum operators LZ, L±, and L2 and express Lx, Ly, Lz in spherical coordinates. 2) Find normalization constants for raising and lowering operators L± and show they are Hermitian conjugates. 3) Note that spin operators S± have the same properties as L± and use this to find matrix representations of S±, Sx, and Sy, obtaining the Pauli matrices.

Quantum Mechanics Problem Set 6

1. a) Prove the following commutation relations. [LZ , L ] = L [L2 , L ] = 0 b) Starting from the denition of Lx , Ly , and Lz nd their expressions in spherical polar coordinates. 2. Similar to the harmonic oscillator we shall now nd the normalization constants for L . a) Show that L are Hermitian conjugates of each other. b) Using the relation between L , L2 , and Lz show that Am l (l + 1) m(m + 1) and l = m l (l + 1) m(m 1), Bl = m m1 . where L+()Ylm = Am l (Bl )Yl 3. The results for S operators are exactly same to that of L . a) Using the above results nd out the matrix representation for the S operators. b) From a) and b) nd out the matrix representation for Sx and Sy . Those would give you the Pauli matrices we discussed in class.
