Comprehension
Strategy
Summarizing (tied in with visualizing physically)
Purpose To encourage the students to fully understand the text and engage with
in and make it their own without much teacher interference in their
interpretation. To advocate the reading is not something to be scared of,
but something to enjoy and relax while doing (as a result of the Literacy
Interview)!
Texts/Resources Green Eggs And Ham by Dr. Seuss (I will be using this book for the next
few weeks, if possible)
Alphabet card/word card
Colored utensils and paper
Assessment Each student will go around and explain what they thought the
book/story was about. Then, they will draw their own version of the
story.
Brief Outline 1. Introduction to what summarizing is.
- It allows you and I to understand a text and make a story fit
into a few words/a drawing.
2. To start off, teacher brings out the alphabet cards and
encourages the students to make up 5 words using the alphabet
cards.
- Teacher will demonstrate by doing it with the students. With
short and easy words like Sam or eggs, instruct the students
to find alternate words with the same ending sound but
different starting sound (i.e. SamPam, eggsheggs)they
dont have to be real words. Dr. Seuss made up his words too!
- When the words are made, the student will stick the word
onto the sheet of paper.
3. Teacher reads the book (or at least half of it due to time).
- Ask: What were words that appeared again and again?
- When the teacher is done, each student will go around and
explain what they thought the book was about. Their
explanations are encouraged to have a beginning, a problem,
and an ending.
- When students were able to go around and summarize, give
them a minute to let lose and act out their favorite scene.
