VI. Induction Regulators

This document discusses induction regulators, which are phase-shifting transformers that can be used to advance the phase of grid voltages or boost voltages in distribution networks. Induction regulators work by varying the output voltage from a minimum to maximum as the rotor axis changes over 180 degrees of displacement relative to the supply phase voltage. They have applications in testing equipment, laboratories, and distribution networks where variable voltage is required.

Application
The equipment may thus be termed a phase-shifting transformer and as such is a
useful piece of laboratory equipment for a.c. meter testing and similar
applications.

It is also used to advance the phase of the grid voltages of grid controlled
mercury arc rectifiers. When the apparatus is arranged as a booster (Fig.2) the
secondary voltage is added to that of the primary as shown in the phasor diagram
(Fig.3).

Induction regulators of this type are used in distribution networks to boost the voltage of
a feeder or alternatively to compensate for variable input voltage, and have many
applications in laboratories and testing plants where variable voltage is required.
