Assignment 1 VCB3053

This document contains instructions for an assignment in hydrology. It provides 4 questions to solve relating to analysis of rainfall and streamflow data from monitoring stations in a catchment area. Students are asked to calculate the minimum number of additional rainfall stations needed to estimate mean rainfall within 5% error, estimate rainfall at an inoperative station based on other station data, calculate change in streamflow storage over 3 hours given inflow and outflow rates, and use Thiessen's method to calculate average precipitation across the catchment using data from 10 monitoring stations. Solutions are due by June 18, 2014 before 5:00 pm.

Assignment 1

HYDROLOGY VCB 3053

Solve all questions. Submit solutions by June 18, 2014 before 5:00 pm, Total Marks 50

1. A catchment area has seven raingauge stations. In a year the annual rainfall recorded by
the gauges are as follows
Station A B C D E F G
Rainfall (cm) 130.0 142.1 118.2 108.5 165.2 102.1 146.9
For a 5% error in the estimation of the mean rainfall, calculate the minimum number of
additional stations required to be established in the catchment. [10 Marks]

2. The normal annual precipitation of five rain gauge stations P, Q, R, S and T are
respectively 125, 102, 76, 113, and 137 cm. During a particular storm the precipitation
recorded by station P, Q, R, and S are 13.2, 9.2, 6.8 and 10.2 cm respectively. The
instrument at station T was inoperative during that storm. Estimate the rainfall at station
T during that storm. [10 Marks]

3. A river reach had a flood wave passing through it. At a given instant the storage of water
in the reach was estimated as 15.2 ham. Calculate the storage in the reach after an
interval of 3 hours if the average inflow and outflow during the time period are 14.1 m
3
/s
and 10.6 m
3
/s, respectively. [15 Marks]

4. TABLE 4 shows rainfall data at 10 stations of a catchment. Calculate the average
precipitation over the catchment area using Thiessens method. [15 Marks]
