Theory: - Notch Is A Device Used For Measuring The Flow Rate Through A Small Tank or
This document discusses measuring flow rate using a rectangular notch. It provides:
1) The equation to calculate discharge (Q) over a rectangular notch based on constants like notch width (L) and coefficient of discharge (Cd), as well as the head of water (H).
2) A procedure to experimentally determine discharge using a notch apparatus, piezometer tube, and stopwatch to measure water level and flow time.
3) A graphical method to calculate the exponent (n) in the discharge equation by taking logarithms and plotting a line of best fit for log(Q) versus log(H).

RECTANGULAR NOTCH :- The discharge over a rectangular notch is given by Q = 2/3 Cd L2g H 3/2
In the above equation for a given notch 2/3 Cd L2g is constant & is denoted by K
K = 2/3 CdL2g
g 2 L 2 K 3 Cd Co-efficient of Discharge = Cd. & Now Q = K. H 3/2
(1) Graphically it in determined Q = K.H n
Taking logarithm on both side Q = K.H n
Log Q = Log K+Log H
Then draw a graph of log Q v/s Log H
i,e, n Log H = Logh Q Log K
H Log K Log Q Log n
Procedure:
1) Fit the rectangular notch to the apparatus. 2) By Starting pump allow the water in channel flow over the sill point of the notch. 3) Wait till the Water level in channel comes to sill level and remain constant. 4) Take initial reading by means of piezometer attached to channel and record H. 5) Again start the motor allow the water level rise above the sill. 6) Take final reading on piezometer when water level comes constant in channel. 7) Repeat the above procedure for six times. 8) Measure the Actual discharge over the notch by means of collecting tank by 10.cm height of water and note down the time.
