ME-321: Advanced Mechanics of Solids - (2007-08, I Semester) Home Work Assignment #4

This document contains instructions for homework assignment #4 of the course ME-321: Advanced Mechanics of Solids. It includes 3 problems related to determining stress distributions in beams and plates using Airy stress functions and superposition principles. Problem 1 involves verifying an Airy stress function satisfies boundary conditions and determining stresses. Problem 2 provides a stress function and asks to find constants and stresses. Problem 3 asks to use a known stress solution to analyze a hole under biaxial tension.

shown in figure. Check if the
boundary conditions are satisfied.
Derive the expressions for the
displacements assuming proper
displacement boundary conditions
at the fixed end. Note that the
traction boundary conditions at the
end (x=0) need to be satisfied only
in terms of the resultant force
system. Determine the stress
distribution in the beam.

2. For the cantilever beam subjected
to linearly varying load, the
following stress function is
provided. Determine all the
constants and the stress distribution in the beam assuming stress boundary condition in terms
of resultant force systems at the fixed and free ends of the beam.

3. Use the stress distribution for a hole in an infinite
plate subjected to remote tension, solved in class, to
construct the solution for the problem of a hole
under biaxial tension shown in figure. Use the
principle of superposition. Does biaxial tension
increase the stress concentration or not?
