Problem 2.5
A certain volatile substance evaporates from an open container into a room of volume 1000ft.
The evaporation rate is determined to be 100mg/min. if the air in the room is assumed to be
well mixed, how many ft/min of fresh air must be supplied to ensure that the concentration of
the volatile is maintained below its TLV of 100ppm? The temperature is 77F and the pressure is
1 atm. Assume a volatile species molecular weight of 100. Under most circumstances the air in
a room cannot be assumed to be well mixed. How would poor mixing affect the quantity of air
required?
Taking out the information:
Volume = 1000ft
Rate of evaporation,Qm = 100mg/min
Volatile concentration, below TLV = 100ppm
Temperature, T = 77F=25C=298K=
Pressure = 1 atm
Molecular weight = 100g/mol
gas constant, R= 0.0821atm.L/mol.K = 0.73024atm.ft^3/lbmol.R
Assumptions:
1. Well-mixed air,
2. Steady state,
By using the equation 3-9

Problem 3-19
Equations 3-12 and 3.14 represent the evaporation of a pure liquid. Modify these equations to
represent the evaporation of mixture of ideal miscible liquid.
Equations 3-12, Qm =
Equation 3-14, Cppm =
Therefore, the equilibrium vapor pressure given by Raoults law for ideal miscible solution. Pi
represent the partial pressure at equilibrium, xi is mole fraction in the liquid and
saturation vapor pressure.
Pi = xi.
Equation 3-11, Qm (
Rearrange the equation,
Qm =
