Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-Intelligent) System: Engine

This document summarizes the idle speed control and engine control systems of the 2GR-FSE engine. It describes functions such as starting control, forecast control, deceleration control, and feedback control that regulate throttle valve position and idle speed. Target idle speeds are listed for different operating conditions such as no load, with electrical load, and with air conditioning on or off. Additionally, it briefly mentions the dual VVT-i variable valve timing system used to improve fuel economy, power, and emissions by adjusting intake and exhaust valve timing.

Idle Speed Control

Starting Control

This function opens the throttle valve at the time the engine is started, in order to increase the air volume and
improve the startability of the engine.
This function controls the throttle valve position when the following signals are detected, thus restraining speed
fluctuations.
When the idling speed is expected to change.

Forecast Control

EG

When the electrical load is changed.

When the air conditioning switch is switched.
When the shift position is changed (N D, D N).
This function opens the throttle valve during deceleration, in order to increase the airflow volume, thus reducing

trol

the vacuum in the intake manifold. This reduces the volume of oil that is consumed as it is drawn into the combustion chamber. It prevents the engine from stalling as a result of a sudden drop in engine speed, and enhances
drivability.
The ECM calculates the engine speed for a predetermined length of time. If there is a difference between the

Feedback Control

actual and target speeds, the ECM controls the throttle valve position in order to control the idling of the engine
at the target value.

Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) System

This engine uses the VVT-i system, which continually varies the phases of the camshafts. By adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust
valves in accordance with the driving conditions, this system realizes fuel economy, high power output, and low exhaust emissions.
