Graphic Design
It seems that every major or career has its own domain. Many of those domains are filled
with literacy practices, many of which have been the same since the career or major begun.
Graphic design has its own domain and practices within the domain. However, graphic design
rarely stays the same for long. Graphic design in an area that is constantly changing with the
passing of time.
Graphic design is a very adaptable field of study. There is an ongoing change in
technology, literature, and trends. With the progression of these areas, graphic design must adapt
with them in order to be successful. Since graphic design was introduced, the change required to
stay up to date with technology, literature and trends was very frequent. Along with these
variables, the location of the variable has an effect on the graphic design. There are many places
in the world where graphic design plays a larger role than others. The designing must appeal to
those who are interested in the variables.
Advertising is where graphic design is used very frequently because it includes all the
variables and more. The designer must be creative and think as a consumer would to design
according to interests. This creates a very competitive domain where all the designers are trying
to create the more successful design. In the ongoing expansion of business, one will always find
some sort of graphic designer involved in the business. The designer gives the business a way to
catch the eye of consumers and prompt them to purchase the product that the business is selling.

An owner of a business or corporation must choose designs he/she thinks will be most
successful. This usually requires more than just one designer.
The competition in graphic design seems to surpass the competition in many other areas.
Skill, creativity, and knowledge of the consumer/audience, are all required to be successful in
graphic design. Corporations will often hire more than one designer. These designers will try to
come up with the most successful design that is required for the corporation, thus creating a very
competitive environment. The domain is very competitive and the employer cannot always
depend solely on one graphic designer to pull through. Thus, multiple are hired to give multiple
options to the employer.
The road and experience needed to become a graphic designer are more difficult than
many people think. A graphic designer is not simply an illustrator. Graphic designers must go
through much more than just simply knowing how to draw. The must know about
communicating with the public and designing something appealing to them. Graphic designers
must learn multiple computer programs in order to create their designs. Depending on the field
the designing is in, some designers may have to know about business, literature, fashion, etc. In
some cases, courses on global communication and advertising are required in this field. Graphic
design affects everyday life more and more as the years go by.
Graphic designs domains are not limited to a degree of formality. The social practices
involved can be formal and informal. Graphic design can be involved in the most formal of
literature to some of the most informal. Graphic design is used in literature through books.
Graphic designers may not actually design artwork for the book. Graphic design can be how the
literature is laid out to the reader. Putting visual keys in places where information in emphasized.

Graphic design is very valued and used in everyday life. The details of graphic design
that are not publically known need to be taught to those who are uneducated in the field whether
they are interested in being a graphic designer or not. It is a very important field that deserves to
be acknowledged for the importance it has on the ongoing change in the world.

What do you like most about graphic design?
o How much
it has evolved over the years. The designer is able to do so many
different things, apply knowledge to a range of projects. The past it has not been
as successful due to advancements in technology now. Flexibility, self
publishing.
What skills besides art/creativity are needed to succeed as a Graphic Artist?
o Able to
meet deadlines. Dedication. Staying up late hours. Longer business
process. Attentive to detail and deadlines. Noticing the little things.

to Michigan, interested in art, led to design in art program, not necessarily

Do you have any tips for me being a student who is interested in pursuing Graphic
Design?
o Think
about and research what your interests are in the field. aig.org? Drawing
skills. Other art related skills.
What are a few different fields in the major? How are they different? How are they
similar?
o Interest
level. Editorial design, environmental design, packaging design,
advertising, branding. press printing
Do graphic designers work together when brainstorming new ideas or are they more
independent with their designing?
o An
agency works together to generate ideas and to execute ideas. Team
environment can change. Some may be individual projects, some designers have
different specialties. Team work is applicable but free lancing is more

individual but you need to work with printers, clients, hiring photographers,
illustrators. Depends on the project.

Statement of Significance
Graphic design is a lot more than people think. There are certain literacys and domains
associated in the subject. Graphic design is used in the world in more ways than just art. Someone who
is excelling in graphic design has a number of career choices that he can use his graphic design
experience for. Graphic Design is a subject that constantly changes over time due to advances in
technology and changes in culture. Due to these changes, their audience can expand to not only other
artists, but also scholars, photographers, students and teachers. Everyone in life will be exposed to
graphic design in one way or another; it can be through the designing of a book, to popular advertising.
This should matter to everyone because it makes everyone aware of the importance of the
program. As time moves on it has become more and more important and well known. Without graphic
design, everything would be plain and uninteresting. Graphic designers are not just illustrators (which
many people believe). Graphic designers are expected to know everything an illustrator knows and
more. They are expected to know how to grasp attention of everyday people, and appeal to their visual
desires. They must have knowledge in their field of work and the literacy required to fill their position.
Graphic designers can be used in politics, business, advertising, and many more. Graphic design isnt
widely known and the purpose of this is to bring it into the light so the importance of it can be revealed.

Forming an Argument
Graphic design is an area that is constantly changing with the passing of time.
It depends on new products, new technology, new literature, and new trends evolving in
any given community.
Graphic design should be better explained to those who are interested or uneducated in
the subject.

Although many majors are a competition, I believe that graphic design is more of a
competition than most majors.
If a graphic designer has a job, he/she is usually not the only graphic designer.
