Assignment - 2 Class 9 English CBSE

Primitive man was more concerned with fire for warmth and cooking than light. He had to carry fire with him when traveling by using a fire band. The fire band may have developed into a torch, and its use for illumination was likely accidental. Early lamps also likely developed by accident when fat dripped from roasting meat onto burning twigs. People then made vessels to hold the fat and float lit reeds in it. These early lamps, made from hollowed stones or shells, persisted in design for a long time.

ENGLISH ASSIGNMENT-CLASS- IX

1. Read the following passage carefully

Primitive man was probably more concerned with fire as a source of warmth and as a
means of cooking food than as a source of light. Before he discovered less laborious ways
of making fire, he had to preserve it and whenever he went on a journey he carried a fire
band with him. His discovery that the fire band from which the torch may very well have
developed, could be used for illumination and was probably incidental to the primary
purpose of preserving a flame
Lamps, too probably developed by accident. Early man may have had his first conception
of a lamp while watching a twig or fibre burning in molten fat dropped from a roasting
carcass. All he had to do was to fashion a vessel to contain fat and float a lighted reed in
it. Such lamps which were made of hollowed stones or sea shells have persisted in
identical form up to quite recent times.
