Foster Care and
Family Literacy
"Children learn anywhere, anytime." -Elena Lopez and Margaret Caspe
What is family literacy?
There are 3 definitions and pieces of family literacy.
These are as follows:
-The study of literacy in the family
-A set of interventions related to literacy
development of young children
-A set of programs designed to enhance the literacy
skills of more than one family member
Why is family literacy important?
Parents play a crucial role in the education of their
children. A child's academic achievements often
reflect that of their parents and their home life.
Family literacy is important because it outlines how
to involve parents in their childrens' journey into
critical literacy and discussing hard concepts. By
involving parents, the children have a way to learn
through their own heritage and family beliefs. This
is different than while they are in the classroom
because in schools, students are presented with
unbiased information regarding topics of
contention.
How does this relate to critical
literacy?
Family literacy is what makes critical literacy topics
so difficult to approach. How can you address a
topic in your classroom that a student has learned
is not to be discussed or that they have already
built a bias
around? It
is your
responsibil
ity, as the
teacher, to
fill in the
gaps and
create a space where your students can think on
their own and form their own opinions.
How does this relate to foster care ?
Think of the influence your parents had on you.
Now try to imagine your life without your parents.
What you are imagining is what foster children live
every day. Often times they move through multiple
households and gain a more worldly perspective on
topics because of all the different views of their
foster parents. In many ways, this can be an
invaluable perspective to have present in your
classroom. A child that has experienced so much
can bring in new view points, especially in an area
where your students are all from similar
backgrounds.
On the flip side, foster children can have a lack of
perspective because of a similar lack of parenting. It
is no secret that the system is flawed and often
times homes are less than ideal. This is where it is
up to you. You can bring in new perspectives for all
of your students, regardless of the backgrounds.
