Fall 2013
Cardboard Installation
Our architecture studio class was split up into two groups of thirty
students and each was given one week to design and build a cardboard
installation in the atrium of the architecture building. The installation
was made entirely out of recycled material and was designed to
improve the acoustics of the poorly designed, brick atrium.
I learned a lot about working in a design group. I have worked in
groups on countless occasions in the past but never such a large group
when designing a project. I learned about direction. There is more than
one direction a project can go and still be successful. The process is
really the most important aspect of design.
It was very important for our group to exploit the abilities and qualities
of the materials we were given. Our group focused on the corrugated
element of the material. The cardboard was strengthened by the way
in which it was created. In designing, we cut the cardboard in a way so
the corrugated strength was oriented vertically. This way the cardboard
could be stacked without faltering. Since the cardboard is corrugated,
it was easy to score and be made into hexagons and the corrugated
material could also be used to dampen the sound.
Creating scale models really helped our group come up with a practical
design. In fact, it was crucial to planning our design. Both our full
scale mock-ups and our scaled models helped to plan our design. We
would not have been successful in our planning without these various
study models.
Part of eco-friendly design is learning how to use recyclable material
even if they are not the most favorable. Adapting to the constraints of
the given materials was key to having a successful design. It is
important to use constraints to your advantage rather than letting
them hinder your ability to construct your project. I have learned to use
what was given to me to help sculpt a design. Not everything can be
built do to lack and cost of materials.
When working in a group this large it is key to cross reference
everyones ideas and weigh the pros and cons. Even though I did not
agree with some small decisions that were made, I was very happy
with the overall result. Flexibility was important in collaborating with
the group.
