The document analyzes MLB teams based on their performance across four metrics: OPS, ERA, stolen bases, and fielding percentage. It ranks each team in these categories and sums the ranks to calculate an overall "Super-Score", with lower scores indicating more well-rounded teams. It then compares the Super-Score rankings to payroll rankings. While expensive teams often place high in regular season standings, the analysis finds that more balanced teams with lower payrolls are those still playing for championships late in the postseason. Money ensures regular season success but does not guarantee chemistry or postseason titles.

Jack McMullen

Major League Baseball is run by money. Its apparent every single year, from
November 1st to March 31st. But, contrary to what the baseball world has come to believe,
money doesnt create team chemistry and win championships. I was on a search for the
most well-rounded teams in baseball, as normal power rankings tend to not look at wellroundedness, but rather the overall strength of the club. Sure, a team can put up a 3.30
ERA, but what if that team cant put up any runs? Sure, that team will win a good amount
of games, but in order to be the best of the best, that ball club must be firing on all
cylinders in all aspects of the game.
Thats where the new formula comes in. I began to rank ball clubs in four separate
aspects from 1-30 in 2014:
OPS
ERA
Stolen Bases
Fielding Percentage
Once I have all these separate rankings for all 30 teams, I summed the ranks together to
create one Super-Score. Teams with the lowest Super-Scores earn the top spots in the
power ranking, while teams with the highest scores are the worst all-around teams in
baseball. Once the Super-Scores were calculated, I put it side by side with the payroll
rankings in Major League Baseball.
Below are the rankings in each category for each team in baseball, followed by

Verdict: Money means wins, but it doesnt mean well-rounded ball

clubs. While the Dodgers were the overwhelming champions of both
aspects, where were they in late October? Nowhere to be found. The
Goliaths of the finance game see themselves at the top of the
standings, but the honest payroll teams with big hearts and young
depth are the ones that find themselves playing baseball for rings.
