PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Thank you to all the parents who came in for conferences this week. It is important to work as a team to
support your child in their academic, social and emotional growth. How wonderful to be able to celebrate
achievements and set goals together. Please remember we are all available every day by phone, note in the
agenda, email or by an appointment for a good old face-to-face conversation. We can deal with issues only
when we are aware of them.

School staff + parents = partners in (little) people

THE BRAGGIN DRAGON

Our Grade 5 Basketball Team, coached by Ms. Yeung, Ms. Marshall and Ms. Okada, had their first

determination, developing skill and team spirit. Go team go!
Douglas Park students are developing a love for reading. Students are getting their Book Club forms
in and receiving certificates along the way. See the attached list of students to-date.

Possible Closure of Langley Secondary School

As the community is aware, since October 2014 the Langley School District has been involved in a
consultation process with the Willoughby community and the Langley Secondary family of schools. At the
December 16, 2014, meeting of the Board a notice of motion was served to consider the possible closure
of Langley Secondary School as part of this consultation process. In considering a school closure, the
Board of Education must follow the procedures prescribed in Policy No. 5029. This policy includes holding
a required public meeting and a 60 day consultation period. A public meeting is being held at Langley
Secondary School on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at 7:00 PM to gather information from the community
about the impacts of the potential closing of the school. The 60 day consultation period will be
completed February 14, 2015. As such, the Board of Education will not be in a position to decide on a
Long Term Facilities Plan recommendation at the Regular Meeting of the Board on January 27, 2015, as
previously indicated. The Board will instead hold a Public Special Meeting on February 17, 2015, at
7:00 PM at the School Board Office to address the possible closure of Langley Secondary in accordance
with Policy No. 5029. A decision on a Long Term Facilities Plan business case recommendation will be
made only after the LSS closure is considered. Written presentations and requests for oral
presentations (speakers will be provided a five minute time limit) at the February 10th public meeting
will be received after Monday, February 2nd at:
Office of the Secretary Treasurer
4875 222 Street,
Langley, BC V3A3Z7
Or via email: [email protected]

COLLABORATION MORNINGS LATE START

Thursday, July 2.
On these mornings school begins at 10:10 (1 st bell at 10:05). If you have NO other daycare arrangements
available you may drop your child off at 8:45 AM. Your child will be supervised by staff and Langley
Secondary School students. Please let the office know if your child will be coming in early so we can have
the required staff available. NOTE: There will be NO Breakfast Club or Open Gym on these mornings.

Students should not be left alone outside on school grounds as there will be no outside supervision
available prior to 9:40.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN

When can your child begin school? Children who will be five years old by December 31, 2015, (born in 2010)
are eligible for the Kindergarten program beginning September 8, 2015. Registration day is Monday,
January 19, 2015. The following documents are required at the time of registration:
Proof of Age (birth certificate)
Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status must be provided for both
student and parent (Canadian birth certificate, Canadian citizenship card, Canadian
passport, landed immigrant documentation, permanent resident documentation/cards)
Proof of residence (drivers license, utility bill, lease/rental agreement).

Registrations received after March 31, 2015, will be considered late and may not result in placement in your
catchment school due to space limitations.

WE NEED YOUR HELP LICE PATROL

Douglas Park is like any other school when it comes to lice. We need your help it getting this problem under
control. Please check your childs hair regularly and if you see anything (nits, eggs, live lice) let the office
know so we can send letters home with classmates reminding them to also check their child. See the
attached information on how to treat head lice. The school also has available an electronic lice comb (which
is quite effective) which you can sign out for use on your child. We are also planning on doing a school-wide
lice check very soon.

AND NOW A WORD FROM YOUR PAC

Dear Parents/Guardians,
The DPCS PAC is trying a new fundraiser (attached) and we hope you will take the time to look through it
and consider supporting the school by purchasing one and helping to spread the word about our fundraiser.
The reason we do fundraising is to provide the extras that help make our school so amazing. For example,
just to take the whole school to Beach Day, the PAC must raise $1,500.00 to pay for food and busses alone.
These coupon books are being offered for the first time in Langley and are very reasonably priced
compared to the huge entertainment books. Just a reminder, the coupons must remain IN the book in order
to be valid, so DO NOT cut them out.
There will also be a PAC meeting Tuesday, February 3, in the Library at 9:00 AM.
Sincerely, DPCS PAC
