Instructional Software
Tutorials
Tutorials function as a stand alone lessons.
A Student should be able to complete a tutorial and
understand a concept.
It should include many elements of instruction
potentially pre-assessments as well as summative
assessments.
Tutorials allow students to work at their own pace. A
live lecture aims for the middle, when struggling
students need repetition and advanced students are
ready to move on as a faster rate.
Tutorials
Zaption, www.zaption.com
Take any online video and add
your own questions to it, start with
an attention-getting question, end
with a longer synthesis question
A variety of question/answer choices
available
Analytics provided for the teacherhe/she can see the answer posted,
how long it took them to complete,
how many skips forward a student
took, etc
Simulations
A simulation helps a student
experience an event or concept for
themselves
Many for history classes are
decision making simulations
allowing history to feel more
relevant
Simulations

Students are immersed in
a story (their name is
even used as the main
character). As the story
progresses they need to
make decisions about
what to do.
Instructional
Games
These instructional programs/
websites are set up to be games
When students hear the word game
they expect that it will be fun, that
expectation can make learning more
enjoyable and increase motivation
to participate & learn
Instructional
Games
iCivics
www.icivics.org
A collection of games that teach
students basic Civics comments
Each game has its own
objective, the score gets
displayed for them, there is
often a progress bar
As students play more
frequently and earn points, they
can customize their avatar just
like a real video game
Problem-Solving
Software
Has much in common with simulations and
instructional games
Has the specific intention of helping
students gain problem-solving experience
Facing a challenge and not having clear
steps to complete it leads to powerful
learning for students that will extend
above curriculum levels
Problem Solving
Software
GeoGuessr
www.geoguessr.com
Players are shown a picture and
need to rotate 360 and zoom
in/out to find clues in the
picture to identify where in the
world it was taken
Each student might choose
different strategies to help them
arrive at their best guess

many miles away you were
