Site Classification (Soil) Form PDF

This document provides information about classifying building sites and selecting appropriate footing systems for residential slabs and footings according to the Australian Standard 2870-1996. It describes: 1. The different site classes (A, S, M, H, E) based on the expected level of site movement from moisture changes. 2. The foundation soil groups that correspond to each site class. 3. Examples of common footing systems (FS, MGS, PBS, etc.) that are suitable for stable site classes A and S. 4. Notes that non-A or S sites require classification by an engineer and that filled sites also require engineering advice.

SITE CLASSIFICATION AND FOOTING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

FOR RESIDENTIAL SLABS AND FOOTINGS

Building applications for single dwellings, large extensions, some light commercial and industrial buildings if
similar to dwellings in size and design must have the site foundation classified in accordance with the Australian
Standard 2870 1996 Residential Slabs and Footings Construction.
Designation

Site classes shall be designated for the expected level of site movement.

Class

Foundation
Most sand and rock sites with no or little ground movement from moisture
changes (sand and rock).
Slightly reactive clay sites with only slight ground movement from moisture
changes (silt & some clay).
Moderately reactive clay or silt sites, which can experience moderate
ground movement from moisture changes.
Highly reactive clay sites, which can experience extreme ground movement
from moisture changes.
Extremely reactive sites, which can experience extreme ground movement
from moisture changes.
Filled sites
Sites which include soft soils, such as soft clay or silt or loose sands; land
slip; mine subsidence; collapsing soils; soils subject to erosion; reactive
sites subject to abnormal moisture conditions or sites which can not be
classified otherwise.
