Shared Reading
Our focus for shared reading was blends and
digraphs. The books that we read were Plaidapus,
The Giving Tree, Max Takes the Train, Quick as a
Cricket, The Very Quiet Cricket, Crunchy Munchy
Cookies, Brining Down the Moon, David Gets in
Trouble, Trouble With Trolls, The Giving Tree,
Making Bread, and Drip Drop. We talked about sh,
th, cr, br, tr, and dr. We came up with a list of
words that start with each of these blends and
digraphs.
Rest Time
During the remainder of the school year we
will begin to phase out our traditional rest time.
We will move more toward a quiet reading time
and small group work jobs. This has been taking
place in our classrooms for several weeks. As we
observe and try to meet a variety of needs for all
of our children, we feel that this is in an important
adjustment. It also aids in the transition to first
grade. Most children have moved beyond rest
time at this point in the school year. However, we
still have a small number of students that need it,
and we will continue to let those children rest.
Shared Journal
I hope that you enjoy looking at your childs
January journal. Please make sure that you have
returned their journal by Monday. They have been
working really hard sounding out their words. It is
so amazing to see the progress that they have
made. We are working on finger and eraser spaces
between their words and using lowercase letters in
their writing. Please encourage your child to write
at home!

Math Journal
The children are continuing to learn about place value
(specifically, the 100s, 10s, and 1s place) as we are moving
through the days of schoolwe are at 112 days today! As
they count to 100 and beyond, they are learning how to and
why we write numbers in a certain order. Additionally, the
students are spending time using the Counting Jar, where
they are comparing and adding different amounts. We
worked on a grab and Count addition math problems and we
finished our February calendar.
