Procedure
Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each group of three students and cut each
worksheet into three sections A, B, and C.
Ask the students to work in groups of three. Give one section of the worksheet to each
student A, B, and C.
Ask the students to cut each section into cards as indicated and write one word belonging to
the category on the card on the back of each card, e.g. place: the beach object: laptop.
When they have done that, the students shuffle their cards together and then spread them
out on the table with the category headings face up and the words they have written on the
back, face down.
Students then take it in turns to turn over two cards of the same category and to make a
comparison between the two words they have turned over.
For example, if the two words are tiger and mouse:
A tiger is more dangerous than a mouse.
A mouse is not as beautiful as a tiger.
If a student turns over two identical words, they should make a superlative sentence.
For example, if the two words are tiger:
The tiger is one of the most beautiful animals in Africa.
When a student has finished their sentence, they can pick up the two cards and keep them.
If a student cannot think of a sentence, or if they make a sentence which is grammatically
incorrect, or which does not make sense, they put the cards back and miss a turn.
The student who has most cards at the end is the winner.
Extension:
Ask the students to put their words into six piles according to the categories.
The teacher chooses a category. The students have to arrange the words they have written
in that category in order according to certain criteria.
For example:
Leisure activity: from most to least expensive
Animal: from most to least dangerous
