2009-Homework 4 PDF

This document provides the details of Homework 4 for the course CE 310 Introduction to Environmental Engineering at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It includes instructions to use data from a previous homework problem involving the Streeter-Phelps equation to evaluate the impact of changing waste water treatment plant parameters. It also includes four textbook problems to solve involving concepts like completely mixed flow reactors vs plug flow reactors, hardness, and determining the theoretical efficiency of a settling basin.

CE 310 Introduction to Environmental Engineering

Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Southern Illinois University Carbondale
Instructor: L.R. Chevalier, Ph.D., P.E., Professor
Spring 2009
Homework 4: Due Monday, April 6
Textbook Problems (Based on 2nd Edition
10 points each

Streeter-Phelps Equation
Use the following data from your previous homework problem
River
Q = 1.08 m3/s
BODu = 11.40 mg/L
DO = 7.95 mg/L
U = 0.39 m/s
WWTP
Q = 0.1507 m3/s
Lo = 230 mg/L
DO = 1.00 mg/L
Use kr = 0.474/day and kd = 0.15/day
Using either your spreadsheet from the previous homework, or the one provided on the course web
site, evaluate the impact of changing the operating parameters of the WWT plant (DO or ultimate
BOD). Take care to only increase or decrease to practical limits (e.g. do not increase DO above
DOsat).
Present your results as a table and a graph. Submit electronically to [email protected]
