Dinosaur Fossils
Dinosaur Fossils
Rationale:
Dinosaurs are a great way to engage children and I hope to facilitate curiosity as
this is one of the most important aspects of human development, in which, I think is
fundamental to become life-long learners. The children will explore the dinosaur
fossil container, as they pretend to be paleontologists were they pretend to
discover dinosaur bones.
Learning focus:
EYLF outcomes: 1.4, 3.1 & 4.1; Children interact together and enjoy digging and
finding fossils that are buried. The children will be using aspects of drama where
they use their imagination to look into the eyes of scientist (paleontologists) who
discover fossils and understand aspects of humanities and social science (imagining
the earth environment when dinosaurs existed).
Requirements/resources:
The book Dinosaur Bones by Bob Barner (Barner, 2001) will be read to the class
and reflective feedback and questioning from the children, in regards to the book,
will be given throughout the pages.
Large container, sand/ dirt/ leaves/ rocks/ props i.e. magnifying glasses, paint
brushes, 4 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 water, rolling pin, cookie cutters, mixing
bowl and spoon small toy dinosaur, small scoopers/ spoons, baking paper and tray.
Facilitiation/Implementation:
Preparation:
1. Pre-heat oven 90C. Using the mixing bowl and spoon, prepare the dinosaur
fossils by mixing the salt and flour together.
2. Gradually add the water and need into a dough.
3. Using the rolling pin, roll the dough out and cut out the shapes with the cookie
cutters.
4. Place on baking tray with paper and use the toy dinosaur to print into the dough
shapes. The place in the oven for at least 2 3 hours.
fill the large container with material such as dirt/ sand/ leaves/ rocks
to make the dinosaur environment look appealing. Place the
dinosaur fossils beneath the dirt and have small spoons/ scoopers,
magnifying glasses and paint brushes ready to explore.
The book dinosaur Bones will be read to the class and information on what
the children know about the extinction of dinosaurs will be exchanged
between the teacher and students. What everyone knows about dinosaurs
and where they (the bones) are seen now.
Asking questions around curiosity facilitation i.e. what lies beneath the sand?
Evaluation/follow up:
- To extend the children can make volcanos to understand the dinosaur environment as well as
the material/ ingredients to use for the volcano.
