T.02.09.022 V2.0

This document describes a method for calculating the thermal gradient of a winding with a single concentric transposed cable (CTC). The method treats the CTC like an equivalent magnet wire by calculating an equivalent enamel insulation thickness and using the overall dimensions of the CTC. It provides the equations for determining the equivalent insulation thickness and dimensions used to model the CTC as a virtual magnet wire for thermal gradient calculation purposes. The method is an approximation that will be replaced in the future by a more sophisticated approach.

DESCRIPTION
This document describes the current method for the calculation of the thermal gradient of a winding
with (single) CTC. The method is an approximative one, based on the calculation for magnet wire.
In the future, it will be replaced by a more sophisticated method.
The idea is : consider the CTC as a magnet wire, with the overall dimensions of the CTC, and an
equivalent paper insulation thickness that takes into account the enamel strand insulation.

Example
CTC 9 * (9.5 * 2.0) ; paper insulation 0.60 ; enamel insulation 0.10
8 cables radially
2 cooling ducts, after cable 2 and 5
S = ( (9 + 1) / 2 * 8 ) / (2 + 1) = 40 / 3 = 13.3333
P = 13.3333 / 2 * 0.1 / 2 = 0.3333
Virtual magnet wire :
bare axial = 2 * 9.5 = 19.0
bare radial = 9 / 2 * 2.0 = 9.0
paper insulation : 0.60 + 0.3333 = 0.9333
