2nd Period
The Elevator was Invented
According to history.com, the very first form
of elevator was invented by a greek
mathematician named Archimedes in 236
BC.
Time line

1853- Elisha Otis invented and patented the safety brake for the elevator
March 23, 1857- Otis demonstrated his safety brake elevator that was steam powered; to people in New York and this is
when everyone realized this is going to have a huge impact on the world.
1885- The first skyscraper was built in Chicago and Otis's safety elevator was what made this building possible.
1889- Otis developed the gearless traction system involving cables and electricity that would become the most common
way to run an elevator.
1903- Otis invented an elevator that would become the general design of today's elevators.
2008- 57 elevators were installed in the world's tallest building that is over 2,694 feet tall.
Present- Otis's company is the world's leading elevator manufacturer. As buildings begin to rise to new heights, so does
the technology of elevators and new possibilities for America.
Patents
FireProof shaft door - Jean Pelvillan

around a drum & rotated by manpower.
Improvements ?
Elevator energy consumptions
According to aceee.org, elevators with
central air conditioning systems is
considered to be about 5% of building
electric use.
Why did we make this
improvements
We made this improvements because we
were all about making Money
who uses it?
People use elevators in public. Mainly, at
businesses and places like the mall.
Impact on Society
It has a great impact on society because
some people are handicap and cannot use
the steps or escalator. Using, the elevator
does not cause you to have lack of air.
Things like the stairs cause you to be tired
and out of breathe.
Improvements Continued.
Some places have improved the look of
the elevator. Most fancy places have glass
elevators and have more room in them, for
some large families.
What would we change?
We would change the weight limit in the
elevator to a higher weight limit and make
the elevator more safe to hold all the weight
in the elevator.
Shocking Facts
Elevators are 20 times faster than escalators.
Elevators are safer than cars, an average of 26 people
die in elevators(elevators technician), there are 26 car
deaths every 5 hours
