Answer all the following questions.


Question 1
(a)

Compare the properties of concrete, steel, timber and masonry. Discuss their
suitability for the construction of buildings, bridges and ferry piers. (10 marks)

(b)

Discuss the various factors that would affect the workability of a fresh
concrete mix.
(5 marks)

(c)

Discuss the various factors that would affect the durability of reinforced
concrete structures.
(5 marks)

Question 2
(a)

Write a brief account of the various factors that would affect the structural
properties of timber and plywood.
(6 marks)

(b)

Sketch the various layers in a flexible road pavement and write an account of
the bituminous mixtures for the various layers.
(6 marks)

(c)

Discuss the effect of air in bituminous mixtures.

(d)

Compare the advantages and disadvantages of flexible pavement constructed


of bituminous materials and rigid pavement constructed of concrete. (4 marks)

(a)

Sketch the crystal lattice of three common types of crystals in metals and
sketch three major types of crystal defects.
(10 marks)

(b)

Explain how crystal defects could be purposely created to increase the strength
of metals.
(10 marks)
