Mrs. Cossa
Book Review
The book I chose to review is Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs.
The genre of this book is Fantasy. I wasnt too sure I would like this book but as soon as I
started, I was hooked! For someone who does not read a lot of Fantasy books, this one was
epically engaging! The story is compelling and beckons the reader onward. The characters are
portrayed extremely well. Riggs life-like plot is about a teenage boy, Jacob Portman, who goes
to an island off the coast of Wales after a family tragedy. As Jacob follows his grandfathers
photographs and clues, he is led to a place no one knew existed. Read this book to find out just
how peculiar these kids are and what kind of trouble they find themselves in!
The authors purpose is to entertain. I know this because of the following examples from the
book, She turned the page to revel a photo of a sadistic-looking dentist. This wight worked as
an oral surgeon. It wouldnt surprise me to learn that the skull hes posing with belonged to one
of his peculiar victims. (pg. 261)
This book is written in Jacob Portmans point of view which is 1st person. I know this
because throughout the book the pronouns used are: I, she, he, we, my. An example from the
book, is on page 214. It says, I picked up the clay soldier and walked overas I drew near, the
one in my hands jerked to life againI put it in with the others and wiped shed clay on my
pants.
Another intriguing aspect of this novel is that Riggs uses real vintage photographs he has
collected over the years to add credibility and visualization to the story. The photos were so
captivating! I cant wait to read the sequel Hollow City! I recommend this book to boys and
girls ages 12 and up. Some parts could be scary for younger audiences. For a great read,
consider this book!
It's an enjoyable, eccentric read, distinguished by well-developed characters, a believable Welsh
setting, and some very creepy monsters. Publishers Weekly
This book is so good! You wont be able to put it down!Isabel Cossa
