Summary of Key Learning Events and Instruction


Week 1
Practical Lesson 1- 80 Minutes
Objective: Discover and assess students initial level of cognitive readiness in
European Handball.
Game:
1. Begin with an inquiry learning method of identifying students level of
knowledge about European Handball. From this break into a complete game of
European Handball. Conclude the lesson by asking students to address how
they think the game went, what worked, what didnt, and what needs to be
addressed in the coming weeks.
Teaching Strategy : Inquiry learning; Small sided games
Assessment: Formative Assessment- Giving students an initial grade from the rubric
(appendix 1). Setting a base for students to build upon throughout the unit of work.
Theory Lesson 1- 80 Minutes
Objective: Understand the different methods of training and how these methods of training can
improve health and fitness.
Lesson: Begin with introducing the students to all six health related fitness methods of training on
a powerpoint, the students will take notes. The students will form groups of three and one person in
each group will look at a specific training methods (continuous, interval, fartlek). The students will
then discuss their understanding of their specific training method to their group with relation to
components of fitness and how they can improve overall health and fitness. Students will then
research a training method, finding out what type of sport will require that specific type of training.
Teaching Strategy: Cooperative Learning/ Inquiry Learning
Assessment: Nil
Practical lesson 2- 40 Minutes
Objective: Understand how to maintain possession and create space
Game:
1. Sash Tag. Confine space and force players to create space by quick movement
and spatial awareness
2. Keepings off. Two teams must maintain possession for as long as possible in a
confined space. Ball sizes will change depending on skill level.
3. Keepings off with scoring zones. After a certain amount of passes students can
pass the ball into a designated zone to score a point.
Teaching Strategy: Inquiry learning; Small sided games.
Assessment: Nil

Week 2
Practical Lesson 3- 80 Minutes
Objective: Know Offensive and Defensive Tactics
Game:
1. Five man weave. Skill directed aimed to cover ball movement from offense to
defense
2. Continuous five Vs five. Students playing offence press up court with the aim of
scoring a modified goal. Students playing defense aim to protect their goals.
Defenders then become offensive players after a shot has been taken
3. Small sided Keepings off. Revisit the small sided game from last lesson with the
modification of a smaller ball. Challenging students to maintain possession
whilst setting up the practiced offensive and defensive settings
4. Expand space to a larger game of Handball
Teaching Strategy: Deliberate Practice; Inquiry learning; small sided games
Assessment: Nil
Theory Lesson 2-80 Minutes
Objective: Understand Health related fitness components.
Lesson:
1) Students will take notes as fitness components are discussed.
2) Students will make a flow chart on the health related fitness components (which they can refer
back to for the test in week 6).
3) Work through workbook questions (Appendix 2)
Teaching Strategy: Inquiry guided learning.
Assessment: Formative task- Flow chart to be handed in at the beginning of next lesson.
Practical Lesson 4- 40 Minutes
Objective: Know Offensive and Defensive Tactics
Game:
1. Four Vs Four. Small sided game of handball with modified ball (tennis ball) and
goal (Cricket Stumps).
2. Handball Game.
Teaching Strategy: Inquiry learning; Small sided games
Assessment: Nil
