ABSTRACT
What is sound wave? Sound wave is a type of mechanical wave, which needs a medium
to propagate and it is also classify as longitudinal wave, also called as compression wave. In
sound wave, the particles of the medium vibrate about their respective equilibrium positions
parallel to the direction of propagation. Certain points of the sound wave experience
compressions which are corresponding to higher pressure whereas certain points experience
rarefactions which are corresponding to lower pressure. Note that at a point of compression,
the neighbouring particles are moving towards it. This causes highest density or pressure at
this point. Conversely, at a point of rarefaction, the neighbouring particles are moving away
from it. This causes lowest density or pressure at this point. The distance between two
adjacent points of compression or rarefactions equal to a wavelength. Refraction of sound
waves occur when the waves bend on entering a medium with different densities where their
speed changes. When a sound wave enters a denser medium, the sound wave travels slower
which produces a loud sound. Therefore, the louder the sound, the bigger the amplitude.
