Standard 2
The professional development day allowed teams to meet to discuss strategies to take data across all settings.
There was time to develop tracking forms and discuss how the data will be used. We need to have assessment
guide our instruction. The school has been using a school created checklist to document how children are doing
based on other children their age. This not a standardized or normed checklist. The HELP is a curriculum
based assessment that has been approved for use in reports by New York State. The school has used this
checklist for evaluations. After my research in alignment to the common core the program administrators are
reviewing it as a possible choice for a school wide use.

I participated in the lockdown drill and writing policy for a shelter-in-place plan. We learned many things about
the logistics of a lockdown and how keeping these children quiet and protected if the need arises is very
challenging. This drill needs to be practiced every year to keep the staff aware of what you can do with a
different group of children in case of emergency. Many of the children thrive on routine and a practice drill is
very confusing. But for the safety of the children the staff needs to be aware of what to do.

The school is now registered for One Call Now. Information is being inputted into the system so it will be
ready to go for emergencies. I spoke with a Family Resource Worker (FRW) regarding outside agencies to
assist families in need. The main outside agency that parent use is the Office for People with Developmental
Disabilities (OPWDD). There are many different services that are available to families. The FRWs assist
families by connecting them to outside agencies. The FRWs will research a topic for a family in need. An
administrator needs to be aware of these agencies as well.

This was a difficult month. There were many changes for me starting the school year and at the beginning of
the month I had a difficult time managing all the different responsibilities. I learned what I did right and wrong
and focused on being more aware of myself. I worked through a way to be more proactive rather than reactive.
I learned that I can, and sometimes should, say no to something someone asks me to do if I know it is not
possible for me to complete. I need to be willing to say no so I can do things well rather than poorly. I do not
need to be perfect and say yes to everything people ask of me especially if something can be completed a
different day. I am learning through my mistakes rather than never making a mistake. I learned also that when
change needs to happen all those involved should be part of deciding on the change. It is the leaders job to
share all the pertinent information in a way that adults learn so decisions can be made. Working in a leadership
capacity I need to be aware of the different communication styles others use as well as what my communication
style is so interactions with adults can go smoothly.
