Lessonn 4

The lesson plan focuses on teaching 2nd grade students about pond habitats. Students will identify and research 6 animals that live in or near ponds, creating an informational chart to display in the classroom. They will also watch a Magic School Bus video on pond ecosystems and write 5 facts learned from the research, book, or video. Accommodations are made for one student with dyslexia, including a more detailed research chart and easier reading level books. Assessment includes an exit slip to check understanding and a future summative assessment where students create a shoe box diagram of one of the habitats learned about.

S.K-2.B.2.1: Understand that all living things are a part of an ecosystem.

I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):

A. The students will be able to:
1. Identify animals that live in a pond by researching the animals they
have chosen.
2. Distinguish between previous habitats and this one by making a
chart as a class.
II. Instructional Materials
A. Printed out research outlines
B. Pond Circle by Betsy Franco
C. Magic School Bus:
D. Video Outline
III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of
additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills
1. Basic research skills; using the computers and textbooks in the
library
2. Understanding of ecosystems
B. Key Vocabulary
1. Pond: A body of water surrounded by land
C. Big Idea

1. There is a wide variety of animals that inhabit in and around the

pond.
D. Content
1. What does a pond look like?
1. Definition
2. Animals and vegetation
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. The students will review what we learned the day before and
gathering at the circle and having a brief discussion on what they
learned.
2. Next the teacher will read Pond Circle.
3. After the story, tell the students that when they are back at their desk
to list all the animals they know that live in or near a pond.
B. Development
1. The students will return to their tables list the animals that they
believe live by the pond.
2. The students will have 2 minutes to make the list and then share with
their tablemates.
3. Bring the students back together and make a list on the board of the
animals the came up.
4. Reduce the list down to 6 different animals that the children will be
focusing on more; newt, toad, mallard ducks, dragonfly, beaver,
snapping turtles.
5. The students will then be given a small packet; a grid chart of
information that will be looking up on the animals. (See attached)
6. All the books that they will be using will already be in the classroom
library.
7. The students will be given roughly 15 minutes to research at their
desk.
8. After 15 minutes bring the students back and the teacher will inform
the students that this information will help them with their end
assignment.
9. The students should be then gathered on the rug with their papers.
10. As a class they will make a chart about the different animals that live
in ponds. This will be displayed in the classroom.
11. The teacher will hold a brief discussion about how what we
discovered compares and differs from the other habitats we learned
about.
12. To transition the students will be sent back to their desk to watch a
Magic School Bus movie on pond ecosystems.
13. Well they watch the movie they will be given an outline to follow the
movie. (See attached)

14. After the movie the children will be asked to write down 5 things
about ponds that they learned today.
15. They should be informed the facts can be on the animals they
researched, the video, or book that they saw today.
C. Closure
1. The slip of paper they are writing will be their ticket out of the
lesson.
2. This slip will not be graded but to observe what the children took
from the lesson and how to reinforce the facts at the beginning of
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. For Landon; a 2nd grade student with dyslexia, I will have a more
detailed version of the chart for the research. I will also have books
that are closer to his reading level available.
2. Charts for the mini research project will be given to all the students.
There will also be a guided note sheet for the video.
E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative
1. The exit slip that is collected at the end of the lesson is what will be
evaluated. These are not graded for points but will looked over marked
and given back to the students.
2. Summative
1. The students will be making a shoe box diagram of one of the habitats
that they learned about.

V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (Reflection on
student performance written after lesson is taught, includes remediation for
students who fail to meet acceptable level of achievement)
Remediation Plan
B. Personal Reflection (Questions written before lesson is taught. Reflective
answers to question recorded after lesson is taught)
VI. Resources (in APA format)
