This class is designed to further educate students on American history including basic
government fundamentals. Throughout the course students will be referring to previous
knowledge while making connections to the new content. Students will also be building
a firm foundation for good research procedure including citations, technology use, and
determining bias. Some topics students will be studying will be the American
Revolution, Civil Rights, significant patterns and themes in beliefs that are relevant to
American and Arizona history. In addition, our team will work to strive to incorporate
interdisciplinary projects that will have students utilize their knowledge from different
content areas. It is my intention to create an engaging and rich course that will
contribute to content comprehension as well as extend resource knowledge.
Student Expectation:
Students are expected to participate fully during class in order to maximize
classroom success. This inquiry-based course is designed to be student centered. In
addition, classroom discussions will be used to further content understanding; therefore,
full engagement is required. Students are expected and encouraged to continually be
respectful due to the sometimes-sensitive information that is found when studying social
studies. History is a great way to gain insight into different cultures and different eras
and try to connect past experiences to students personal lives.
Late Work:
Full credit for late work is only accepted if a student is able to provide
documentation of an excused absence. Late work will only be accepted if a student is in
need of a test retake*. If so, all missing work must be completed in order to retake a
test.
Absences and Tardiness:
For excused absences, the student has as many days to make up the work as
the days they missed without penalty. For prolonged absences, students should meet or
email with the teacher in order to create a plan for work completion. Students who are
tardy to class without a teachers note and miss that days bell work will be unable to
make up the work and lose points. It is the students responsibility to get to class on
time. Students are able to go to the bathroom during class*, so students who are unable
to use the facilities during passing period are still able to do so once class starts.
Technology:
Students will be participating in the one-to-one program where each student is
assigned a computer that they are allowed to take to and from school. This laptop is to
be used specifically for school work and will be monitored by the teacher, school, and
district. Students will be educated on the general use of the technology and for certain
assignments, other applications will be thoroughly explained. All other technology
procedures are explained in the Students Acceptable Use Policy that is given to the
students once they receive the laptop as well as posted on the schools website. Cell
phone use is prohibited unless the teacher gives other explicit directions.
Grading Policy:
A= 90%-100%
B= 80%-89%
C= 70%-79%
D= 60%-69%
F= 59% or below
Student participation and performance will both be evaluated during grading. Class
assessments will mostly include projects as well as other quizzes and homework. It is
my intention to return graded assignments as fast as possible to students. Viewing
grades will be available online through the schools website. Parents, who request their
childs grade, must make an appointment with the teacher or otherwise access the
website.
Materials:
A binder for storing notes and handouts (does not need to be separate from other
classes, just needs to be organized)
Pen and pencils (either blue or black ink)
Lined paper (college ruled preferred)
Separate composition notebook for daily tasks that will be collected periodically
Any additional materials needed will be at teachers request with sufficient notice
These classroom rules and procedures are put into place to maximize learning and
growth within the classroom. It is my hope that students, parents, and myself alike can
create a respectful and positive learning environment. All other disciplinary issues and
procedures are to be followed using district and school guidelines.
*Teachers discretion is maintained throughout the students time in class
Please email me if you have any questions or concerns regarding the course. Email is
the best way to communicate for me and I strive to respond to quickly. I am also open to
scheduling conferences between both students and parents alike at request. I hope we
all are able to have a fun and productive year and Im looking forward to getting started!
