ASSISTING IN BONE MARROW ASPIRATION

Definition: removal of bone marrow sample through a needle (trochar)


Purpose:
-used as a laboratory examinations of RBC, WBC, Platelets, stem cell
transplantation
- diagnose infection and hematologic disorders
-examine for cancers
Materials:
-sterile syringe
-sterile gloves
-curve forceps
-straight forceps

-bandage scissors
-lidocane
-waste receptacle

PROCEDURE
RATIONALE
1.Check physicians order.

1. Explain procedure to the

2. Let the patient sign the
informed consent.
3. Gather all materials needed.
4. Do medical hand washing.
5. Prepare hypoallergenic tape at
bedside table.

to the selected site

8. Using sterile technique, clean
the site with betadine cleanser.
9. Do open gloving. Arrange
materials in the sterile set-up.

Hand the eye sheet to
the physician

give the sterile syringe to the
physician, offer the anesthetic
agent using the non-dominant
hand.

Prepare the bottles
(specimen bottles)

Offer sterile gauze to the

Remove the drape

Label the specimen
