First Day of School Script

8:00 Greet Each Student at the Door


Say, Good Morning! To everyone
Encourage students to find their name tag on a desk& empty their backpack.
Tell them to their number above a coat hook and place their jacket and bag on their hook.
Have Students write their name on a popsicle stick and put it in the cup.
Encourage students to find their seats and begin working on project:
o Name Art Creating a shape with the letters in their first name.
8:10 Attendance
Introduce the bell signal
Site Pledge of Allegiance
Using attendance sheet take attendance.
Send two students to the office with lunch count and attendance sheet.
8:15 Introductions
Use the opportunity to teach procedure, Getting Students Attention Class Class.
o Have students reply, Yes Yes.
o Choose three volunteers to show the class what this looks like.

Talk (teach) about procedure, Morning Assignment, using a power point.
o Have a few students model how this should look each morning.

Teach transitioning procedure (wind chime).
Explain why we will have a morning meeting every day.
Explain to students what the wind chime mean transition.

Greet everyone
Have everyone say their name; everyone else will greet them.
Explain there will be no sharing this week, we are learning how to follow rules and procedures. We will start to share next
week along with VIP.
Share the classroom rules and the consequences if rules are not followed
Tell Students the importance of school and learning: Learning is fun, and it is why we are here. We have rules to give a safe
and happy learning environment.
Go over the rules; make sure they all understand them.
Have students role play the rules with random scenarios
Show and explain the consequences chart
The first check = warning
Second check = 5 minutes recess owed
Third check = No recess writing
The fourth check = you (student) calls parents
The fifth check = Loss of Fun Friday
Sixth check = Meeting with parents & Principal

9:45 Break and Game Time


Teach procedure for lining up & walking in hallways

Introduce one-morning meeting game (shoe greeting)
Show students how to greet properly another student
If you break the rules, you do not play
If three or more students break the rules, the game ends.
10:00 - Interviewing Students Small Group Activity
Rehearse Getting Students Attention procedure
Class Class
Explain one way we make friends if finding classmates we share similarities with
Break into small Groups 2 girls 2boys
Interview two people in your group 1 boy, one girl
Ask them five things you would like to know about them
Write down your questions and their answers
Write a brief summary of the two people you interviewed and similarities you share with them.
Be ready to share with the class.
10:45 Recess
Rehearse lining up procedure
o Eyes forward
o Feet forward
o Voices off muted
o Arms folded in front
Rehearse lining up procedure again when coming back inside.
11:00 Group Sharing
Remind students what it means to be an active listener
o What does our body do?
o Eyes?
o Ears?
o Hands?
o Feet?
o Brain?

Tell students when they are sharing they need to use their big voices so everyone can hear them.
Tell students to stand up when speaking student announces their name as one who they interviewed.
Listening students may ask two questions after sharing student is finished

11:45 Introduce Daily 5


Rehearse transition signal wind chimes
Call students to meeting circle
Explain to students the purpose of having daily 5 & choices
o reading to self
o read to someone
o word work/ spelling words
o listen to reading/ computers (limit 5)
o Cursive Logs writing
Rehearse class transition signal (wind chime)
Tell students how many 15 minute rounds they will be doing today
Using clipboard checklist begin asking students what they would like to do.
12:00 Lunch/ Recess Procedure
Tell students the procedure for lunch: / rehearse a few time with students
o rehearsing lining up/ walking in the hallway
o walk into the lunchroom
o follow your lunch teachers directions
o stay seated and quiet while eating lunch
o clean up your eating area
o do not leave until your lunch teacher dismisses you
o When playground duty blows whistle at the end of Whistle line up quickly and quietly
I will be there shortly to pick you up be ready.
12:30 Lunch/ Recess
1:15 Come inside/ Teach End of Day Dismissal
Stress to students the bell does not dismiss them the teacher does
Explain that 5 minutes before the end of the day students will begin to prepare by cleaning up their classroom/ area.
After 2 minutes teacher will ask students whose area is clean to get their backpack and coat and to empty mailbox.
Once the bell rings, your teacher will only dismiss students who are standing quietly ready to go
Rehearse End of Day Dismissal
Have a few students model what this procedure looks like.
2:00 Reading Assessment/ Cursive Log
Explain to students that the reading assessment is to see where they are in their reading so you (teacher) can group them with
other readers at their level.
Tell students while others are being assessed they need to start working on their cursive log
Express there is not any talking or bathroom breaks at this time.
2:50 Begin End of Day Dismissal
Explain to students this week we will be starting clean up a little early, so we do not run out of time.
Tell students extra time does not mean we have time to waste.
Tell students to clean up their area pick up three pieces of trash
Ask which students are walking or being picked up have them line up in designated area
Ask other students who should be riding a bus to line up in designated area
Tag students who ride bus with sticker with their bus number
3:00 School Dismissal
Dismiss student who are showing you they are ready to leave
Wish each student a great Evening - thanking them for a great day.
