Design and Construction of Tunnels in Asir and in Al Baha Saudi Arabia

The document describes three tunnel construction projects in Saudi Arabia: Shaar, Al Baha, and Al Juwwah. It provides details on the design and construction methods used, including four standard cross section types to accommodate different rock conditions. Temporary rock bolts and steel arches were used for support during construction, with final concrete linings installed once complete. The construction method was NATM which involved adapting the design based on observed rock conditions and installing additional supports as needed. Several case studies are presented demonstrating how unexpected conditions were addressed. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of design flexibility and engineering judgment to successfully construct tunnels through variable geology.

Conclusions
•Design of the supporting structure of tunnels needed to be adapted to
the actual conditions encountered on site.
•For a successful construction of the tunnel, it is therefore essential
flexibility of the design coupled to good engineering practice and
judgement. Although this may lead to increase the costs for the
completion of the structures, it is to be bear in mind that unforeseeable
geological conditions can always be encountered.
•This was described on the remedial measures implemented on the
tunnels of the “Tihama descents” projects: the direct inspection of the
cave allowed to take immediate action to cope with the relevant
problems.
