Students will research a chemical element and present key information about it to the class through a creative avenue such as a PowerPoint, poem, song, skit, or dramatic monologue. Each student must answer 18 questions about their chosen element covering its basic properties, compounds it forms, abundance, naming, discovery, and uses. Presentations will be graded on creativity, organization, research quality, and clarity of conveying the essential chemical data about the assigned element.

Chemical Elements Project

Purpose: To provide a more meaningful understanding of the elements of the periodic table. To
analyze the chemical data of an element of the periodic table and present this information
through a creative avenue to other class members.
Method: Each student will choose a chemical element to research. No two students can choose
the same element. I will allow two students to work together; however, two elements must
presented in the collaboration. Each student will research his or her chosen element and answer
the 18 questions below. The information obtained by these questions will be presented to the
class in one of the following ways:
power point presentation 10 slides minimum; must include images of element, uses, and
compounds; Remember not to read slides but you can use note cards to assist your presentation.
poem must include alliteration, assonance, consonance, metaphor, personification, simile, or
symbolism; structure can be in the form of conventional rhyme and meter, free verse, sonnet, or
ode.
song - minimum of 4 verses -4 lines each; you may bring instruments to play or cd/tape for
background music.
skit 2 students; 6-8 minutes; must have 2 items per element used in skit that relates to element
for visual aide
dramatic monologue 3-5 minutes; must have 2 items that relates to element for visual aide
All other types of presentations must be approved by Mr. Montoya prior to the due dates
All of these presentations are to be conducted in proper taste. Any use of inappropriate language
or behavior will result in ceasing of the presentation, a grade of zero and disciplinary action. A
copy of your presentation must be given to the instructor before performing or presenting.

10) Is this element a solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature?(1)

13) List four physical and four chemical properties that your element has.(4)
14) Give the names and chemical formulas for 5 compounds in which this element exists.(5)
15) How abundant is this element in the earth's crust, the ocean, and the atmosphere? You need to
find at least one. (1)
16) How was this element named? Include origin (Latin, Greek, etc.), word(s), and the
meaning(s). (3) Example: The origin of this element comes from the Greek words "oxus"
meaning acid and "gennan" meaning generate.
17) Who discovered this element? When? (2)
18) Name five uses for this element. (5)
