Engineers must meet several requirements for admission to the profession including obtaining an engineering education from an accredited program, gaining relevant work experience, passing an exam to demonstrate their technical knowledge, and maintaining a clear criminal record. The Ontario Professional Engineers Act establishes criteria for licensing and defines misconduct, with actions such as harassment or negligence that could endanger public safety grounds for revoking an engineer's license. Consulting engineers have additional specifications, requiring at least two years of direct public practice and a total of five years of satisfactory engineering work experience.
