The Lovely Bones Characterization

Big Idea: Characterization is a crucial literary concept that makes a story compelling, and allows
for the reader to have a better understanding of the novel as a whole.
Objective: Students will be able to identify and understand characterization. They will be able to
apply the concept to the novel The Lovely Bones.
Essential Questions: What is characterization? What are the types of characterization? Why is it
important? How can we characterize the people in The Lovely Bones? How does this help us
understand the novel better?
Materials: SmartBoard, notes (resource), laptop.
Subject-Area Competencies:

Class and Grade: Grade 10, 75 minutes


Activity:
1. (Two Minutes) Attendance and welcoming, students will be sorted into groups. Each
group is a different character.
2. (Ten Minutes) Students will be presented with the concept of characterization. The types
of characterization will be discussed and specific examples from The Lovely Bones will
accompany these concepts. Resource groups will be given notes so they can follow along.
3. (Fifteen Minutes) With the use of their books, each group will complete a character
sketch of five different characters. They will be given a chart to fill out where they will
provide information about each character.
4. (Five Minutes) Each group will present what they have written down to their groups, and
the class will give some feedback, ensuring that the groups did not miss any important
details.

5. (Twenty Minutes) The students will then, in their groups, complete a journal entry. Each
group will use their skills on characterization to write a journal entry from the character
that is assigned to them. Specific instructions will be handed out to each group.
6. (Five Minutes) Each group will share their journal entry. This will be accompanied by a
brief discussion of what they did right and anything that they may have missed out on.
7. (Ten Minutes) Any time left will be used to discuss any new or important concepts that
were evident in the chapter read for homework on the previous night.
8. (Three Minutes) Students will be asked to write exit cards that entail them to write two
questions they have about the novel.
