Major Project #2
Name of Intern: Iffeisha Gordon-Toppin
Date: January 10, 2016
Site Supervisor: Brandon Pinkney
University Supervisor: Patricia Drummond
Provide the following (please be succinct)
1. Title of proposed proje
Schoolwide Data Protocol with Graphic Organizer
2. Overview
The data team at the school where I am currently employed would like o get teachers more
engaged with data. The goal is to have them use data more effectively as a tool to inform
‘nstruction. To move this project along, the data team would like to find or develop a schoolwide
data protocol and graphic organizer that all staff members can use atthe team as well as
individual level to record and analyze student data, This tool should help to promote consistency
as well as serve as an accountability tool.
3. Rationale
This major project was suggested by our principal, Mr. Pinkney. This was his first year at our
School and he came with a passion for using data to affect change in instructional institutions
Through discussions and investigation of the culture of our school he realized that we had anumber of data sources but were not tapping into them to the extent where we could use them
effectively to improve our institution
In response to the need to have a schoolwide data analysis system I was asked to gather the
‘data minds’ of the school, which I did and as a team we decided to develop a schoolwide data
protocol and a tool to use in analyzing data collected at all levels of the school, So we set out to
and developed the tool and has since done our introduction of the tool to the staff, and are now
collecting data 01
4, Outcomes for this project:
‘The expected outcome of this project is that the staff and administrators will be provide with
a protocol and a tool that the can use to interact with data on every level, whether as a whole
school, grade level team or individual teacher. The tool once utilized can be attached to
performance evaluations as evidence, used in meetings as a snapshot of how teachers are using
data to guide instruction and as a way to group students and track growth for administration
purposes.
5. Alignment:
This project is aligned to the leadership standards in a number of ways, especially to those
representing the Instructional Leadership Outcomes.
In conjunction with the National Standards for Educational Leaders (ISLLC, 2008), this project
aligns with a number of indicators including Visionary Leadership, where an education leader is
responsible for promoting the success of every student by facilitating the development,
articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of leaming that is shared and supported
by all stakeholders, This is being done through collaboratively develop and implement a shared.“sion and mission t have the use of data as a means to inform instruction on a schoolwide level
be a part of our regular model of highly effective instructional practices. Through the project
‘myself and the data committee members have also created and intend to implement plans to
achieve goals and promote continuous and sustainable improvement through the consistent
monitoring and evaluation ofthe progress being made and are willing to revise plans as needed,
This project also aligns with the ISLLC in regards to Collaborative Leadership where it
ee — by collaborating with
faculty and community members, responding to diverse ‘community interests and needs, and
ee——=F=r—“‘EN and
analyzing of data and information pertinent to the educational environment, The hope is to not
nly build and sustain data informed communications with families and caregivers but to also
have data ready and at hand to share with community partners in an effort to keep them informed
4s well as updated on the progress their funding is helping us to make as a school
‘The project also aligns with the Maryland Instructional Leadership Framework (MSDE,
2005), where it focuses on Alignment All Aspects of a School Culture to Student and Adult
Learning. This project allows the leader to demonstrate mutual respect, teamwork, and trust in
dealings with students, staf, and parents, as wel as effectively develop a professional learning
community aligned with the school improvement plan, focused on results, through the promotion
of opportunities for leadership and collaborative decision making distributed among
stakeholders, especially teachers. The hope is that this tool will empower teachers in their use of
data. They will see how data can be used at different levels within the school to help students be
more successful. Teachers will be able to come together at grade level teams as well as a wholeindependent
school to discuss and analyze data in respect to our progress and areas of growth at
rade levels and as a school.
The project also aligns with the Maryland Instructional Leadership Framework in that it
provides opportunities for teachers to engage in collaborative planning and critical reflection
during the regular school day (job-embedded). We will also be presenting our PD at a
Differentiated professional development session geared at addressing career stages, needs of
staff, content areas taught, interest and grade levels. The most important standards with which
this project aligns is, Improve Instructional Practices Through the Purposeful Observation and
Evaluation of Teachers and Ensuring the Regular Integration of Appropriate Assessments into
Daily Classroom Instruction. These standards are represented in this project through the ongoing
conversations that the data team will have with teachers as to how state content standards,
voluntary state curriculum and/or local curriculum, and research-based instructional strategies
are integrated into daily classroom instruction. Teachers will be expected to use data to develop
or select assignments that are rigorous, purposeful, and engaging for their students. This
selection should then lead to student work that is appropriately challenging and demonstrates
new learning. Using the data protocol and recording graphic organizer teachers will develop, find
and utilize assessments that regularly measure student mastery of the content standards as well as
formative assessments that are a regular part of the ongoing evaluation of student performance
and that serve as the basis for adjustments to instruction.
Finally, the effective implementation of this project should lead to the development and use
of appropriate interventions for individual students and groups of students based on results of
assessments.6. Indicators of success for this project:
The indicators of success for this project would include be are not limited to:
~The use of the data protocol in team meeting atleast once per month
“SSessments for for use in grouping students and planning instruction accordingly
~ The use of the protocol at our once every other month schoolwide PD on analyzing
schoolwide data trends
~The (ool being our go to when interacting with data in the school on any level of
analysis,
~ Inclusion of the tool in our data binders.
7. Sustainability:
Sustainability is an essential factor in any project that requive time and effort, especially if the
intended outcome isto positively impact an entire school
1m regards to this data driven project, the indicators of success of the Project will also be used as the
fctors that dictate the sustainability ofthe project. My school ‘currently has a number of long-term goals
for this year; one of which is to improve our student Measures of Academic Progress (MAPS) and
Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) data. I believe having a
Schoolwide data analysis protocol and recording tool is one way to help achieve this feat
"know that right now as school data is really important to use, for our Charter renewal as well as
our Expeditionary Learning credentialing process so I"m sure the buy in willbe good, especially form the
‘administration. The team that we have working on data right now should help make the project
Sustainable as well a the fact that the voted on and selected protocol and too! wil be introduced to the
staff and they will be trained on how to use it. These will also be included in the next printing of the staff
handbook, on our resources forum page as well as in our resources google drive folder.8, Needed Resources:
