Methodology
This class will be the final lesson in the unit plan and will be piecing together all of
the lessons. Students will be able to relate the lessons to come to a better
understanding of the unit. It will incorporate not only movement based learning,
but also conceptual learning. We will use film as a visual and informative aid on the
history of the unit concept. This class will include many discussions that will lead to
exercises exploring these ideas. Students will leave the class having a stronger
understanding of what the unit concept is.
Introduction of Concepts
Class will begin with the group in a circle and we will start by talking about what we
have learned over the past couple of classes. We will talk about how they relate and
discuss the possibilities of combining the ideas from each lesson. This will lead into
what release technique is and we will start with the film on the history of the
technique.
Exploration & Application of Concepts
Release Technique Exploration: Based on what we have discussed at the
beginning of class, we will do a structured improvisation. The teacher will go
through each weeks lesson as a separate improvisation section. Then the teacher
will begin to structure the improvisation more by mixing concepts together. The last
part of the improvisation will be to explore release technique based on the past
lessons and historical knowledge of it.
Release Technique Application: The teacher will begin by teaching a fairly
simple combination based on release technique at center floor. After going through
the combination the teacher will have the students do the whole phrase keeping in
mind the technique. We will stop to discuss places we felt it applied most in the
combination. The teacher will then ask students to touch any part of their body.
After everyone points to a place the teacher will instruct that they will do the
combination again, focusing on finding places in the combination they can release
that part on their body. The teacher can choose to do this in groups if time allows.
Post-class Reflection
We will end class in a circle and cool down while we reflect on our
learnings. We will go around and each student will share something they
learned over the unit about release technique, about their own dancing, or
anything they find applicable to the unit. We will end class by closing up
thoughts on the unit and begin to introduce the next unit plan.
