A Russian hacker, known as the Collector, has shared tens of millions of credentials of Yahoo!, Gmail, and
Hotmail, reported Reuters. According to the report, the hacker has data of about 273 million accounts of
different email services. This is one of the largest security breaches.

The majority of the stolen usernames and passwords of email accounts consist of popular Russian email
service Mail.ru. The report for these hacked accounts was found by Hold Security researchers when a
Russian hacker posted on an online forum that he has more than 1.17 billion credentials with him. The
hacker was also ready to give away these stolen credentials.
Stolen records contain data of almost 57 million Mail.ru users, having about 90% of the monthly active
users (MAU). The Collector has data records of about 33 million Hotmail/Outlook users, 24 million Gmail
users, and 40 million Yahoo! users as well. Data of other small email services from China, Germany, and
other countries has also been stolen.

The hacker asked for less than $1 for the copy of the entire data set which Hold Security refused to give
due to its company policy. However, it got hold of the data when the security company promised to post in
positive comments about Collector on hacker forums.
Mail.ru said that it will let its users know if anyone of them is affected by it. Microsoft stated: Microsoft has security measures in place to detect account
compromise and requires additional information to verify the account owner and help them regain sole access."
Thousands of email addresses and passwords in the list were of the employees from banking, retail, and manufacturing sector in the US.

How Dangerous Can This Data Be?

People generally keep one password for multiple accounts as one password is easy to remember. This is where hackers exploit users. The emails and
passwords of these services can be tried by the hackers on bank accounts and credit cards, which can result in a financial theft. Founder of Hold Security
Alex Holden, said that these credentials can be abused multiple times.

How To Secure Your Email Accounts?

Whether you are affected by the stolen data or not, taking precautionary measures for safe side is always
recommended. For now you can change passwords of all of your email accounts. Some of these email
services provide two-factor authentication through text messages. Make sure you get done with twofactor authentication as well to secure your account better.
This is not the first time that Mr. Holden has uncovered a data breach. In the past, he uncovered some of
the biggest data breaches that affected millions of users of JP Morgan, Adobe, and Target.
