The feudal system was a political and economic system that existed in Europe from the 9th to 15th centuries. It was based on relationships of loyalty and military service between lords and vassals. At the top was the king, who owned all the land and granted it to barons in exchange for their loyalty and service. Barons controlled their lands as manors and granted land to knights in exchange for military service. Knights granted land to peasant villeins or serfs in exchange for farming the land. This created a strict hierarchy with the king at the top.

remain faithful to his king so that he would not
give the land to a different king. The people
who got land from the king were called Barons.
Barons were wealthy, powerful, and had
control on his land.

BARONS-
Known as the lord of the manor and were in
control of their land. They had their own
system of justice, made their own money and
had taxes. They had to serve on the royal
council, pay rent, and give the king a military.
Also had to provide the king and his court with
lodging and food when they traveled. Very
wealthy and were given land by the kings.

KNIGHTS-
Knights were given land by Barons. The
knights had to provide protection and military
services for the Barons. They weren’t as rich as

system.
Villeins- Villeins, sometimes known as
serfs, were given land by Knights. They
were not allowed to leave the Manor and
had to ask their Lord's permission before
